The Retro Mix Video of the Week: Do the Freddie by Freddie & the Dreamers

Happy 80th Birthday to Angie Dickinson

It's kinda hard to believe that Angie turns the big 8-0 today. Although Angie has done scores of film and TV roles in her 50-plus year career, she is probably best remembered for her role as Sgt. Suzanne "Pepper" Anderson on the hit series Police Woman (which ran on NBC from 1974-1978).

These days, Charlie's Angels (which debuted 2 years later) gets most of the credit when people talk about female crime fighters of 70s TV. However, Police Woman was the first successful hour-long drama series in American primetime TV history to feature a woman in the starring role. With Angie proving that a female could carry an hour-long drama, she helped pave the way for the aforementioned Charlie's Angels as well as such series as The Bionic Woman, Wonder Woman, and Cagney & Lacey. In addition to Angie's role on Police Woman having an impact on the fictional world of TV, it was also influential in real life. The success of the series led to a sharp increase in applications for employment from women to police departments around the United States. So to those who dismiss Police Woman as exploitative fluff, take that... turkey!

Side note: When I think of Angie Dickinson, I'm also reminded of a great line from an episode of Frasier. The subplot involves Frasier being hooked on a mini-series. When Roz is surprised that Frasier actually likes the mini-series, he tries to explain.

Frasier: I think some of the intricacies of the plot are downright Dickensian
Roz: Yeah - Angie Dickensian!

Anyway, happy 80th Angie! Below is the season 4 opening credits sequence to Police Woman.

Friday Funday Trivia: TV Spin-offs

This week's quiz features 3 montages containing 15 photos of TV spin-offs. You have to correctly identify the name of the spin-off and the show that it was spun off from. However, the photo questions are not "all or nothing". This means there are separate point vales for the name of the spin-off and the name of the "parent" series. The first point value is for the name of the spin-off and the second point value is for the name of the "parent" series. To enlarge the montages, click on them. Below the montages are the point values for each photo (100 pts total).

If you are a Friday Funday Trivia virgin about to be touched for the very first time, please read the following rules before playing:

* The game is pub style so looking up the answers, using friends/family for help, etc. is not allowed.

* If you are the only player to correctly identify a photo, you earn 5 bonus points. The first player to submit their final answers to me will earn 2 bonus points.

* Please do not post your answers in the comments section. Instead, send them to ultfan@gmail.com no later than Friday night (9/30) at 11:59 PM EST. The answers will be posted on Saturday, Oct. 1st.

Not an official rule: If you have no clue about a photo, feel free to come up with an intentionally funny answer. Although you won't get credit for a correct answer, you'll get a thumbs up from me for originality, execution, and showmanship. What can I say, I love to be entertained and I'll take it any way I can get it!

Have fun and good luck!

Please Take A Moment To Vote In the Current RRHOF Poll... Thank You

On Tuesday, the nominees for possible induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced. They are as follows: The Beastie Boys, The Cure, Donovan, Eric B. & RakimGuns ‘N RosesHeartJoan Jett and The BlackheartsFreddie King, Laura Nyro, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rufus feat. Chaka KhanThe Small Faces/The FacesThe Spinners, Donna Summer, and War. The names highlighted in bold are first time nominees. You can learn more about the nominees by clicking the link at the bottom of the post.

Although the list of nominees isn't perfect, it's the best I've seen in a few years. There's no question there are still some big time oversights. However, the nominating committee can't correct all of their past fuck ups in one year. At the very least, this year's crop of nominees appears to be a step in the right direction.

According to the rules, the top 5 vote getters will be inducted. Although Kiss has a better shot at induction than the average fan getting a chance to vote, for this poll you get to pretend you're on the committee.

Which five nominees would you like to see make it into the RRHOF? The poll is in the upper left hand corner of this page. Also, who are the most glaring ongoing RRHOF snubs?

Answers To Friday Funday Trivia: One-hit Wonders

Below are the answers to this week's quiz. With a score of 76 out of 80 points,  Rich is this week's winner... congratulations!

As you probably noticed, all of the one-hit wonders in this week's quiz are performers best known for their work outside the music business. I did this for a few reasons. I felt that identifying many of the typical one-wonders by photo would be too hard, plus it was easier to find good photos of the types of performers I featured. Also, I thought it would be fun to use performers not normally associated with music.

Along with the names of the artists and the song titles are the peak positions each tune reached on the Billboard Hot 100.

Thanks to everyone who played; stay tuned for next week's Friday Funday Trivia!

R.E.M. Calls It A Day

Earlier today, R.E.M. announced they are amicably calling it quits after 31 years (you can read more on the story by clicking the link below). Although I consider myself a fan, I'm not upset about R.E.M.'s break up. After all, 31 years is a long time for a band and I like the fact that R.E.M. went out on their own terms. For those who are feeling down about R.E.M.'s split, it's not the end of the world as we know it because they've left us with plenty of music to enjoy. Speaking of which (since I'm a full-fledged listoholic), here are 10 of my favorite R.E.M. songs (in no particular order):

  1. Exhuming McCarthy
  2. Losing My Religion
  3. Gardening at Night
  4. Get Up
  5. Near Wild Heaven
  6. The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite
  7. Imitation of Life
  8. Can't Get There from Here
  9. Disturbance at the Heron House
  10. Man on the Moon
Feel free to list your fave R.E.M. tunes, as well as another other thoughts you have about them, in the comments section.

Law & Order: SVU Returns This Week

From l to r: Dann Florek, Richard Belzer, Danny Pino, Mariska Hargitay,  Ice-T., and  Kelli Giddish

On Wednesday September 21st, the 13th season opener of Law & Order: SVU debuts. The upcoming season is one of transition as the long-running drama will be without the services of Christopher Meloni (Det. Elliot Stabler) and B.D. Wong (Dr. George Huang). Meloni's departure is because his contract negotiations fell through and Wong left to become a regular on the upcoming NBC midseason replacement series Awake. Joining the show as the two new detectives are Danny Pino (Det. Nick Amaro) and Kelli Giddish (Det. Amanda Rollins). No word yet on how Wong's character will be replaced.

Due to the departure of Meloni, some fans have already said they're done with Law & Order: SVU. I'm not one of them. As much as I enjoyed Meloni's work on the show, I'm intrigued to see how the new season unfolds. In addition to seeing what Pino and Giddish bring to the show, it's going to be interesting to see how Det. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) deals with the absence of her longtime partner Elliot. Also, former cast members Stephanie March (ADA Alexandra Cabot) and Diane Neal (ADA Casey Novak) are returning this season too!

For those who are bailing on L&O: SVU because of the cast changes, I say give it a chance. For sure, the show won't be the same with Meloni and Wong. However, not being the same doesn't mean the show won't be any good.

Update: I forgot to add that one of the best actors in the business may be joining L&O: SVU in a recurring role. According to reports multiple Emmy winner Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street and Men of a Certain Age) is currently in negotiations to play an attorney for the underprivileged on the show.

Below is a sneak preview containing scenes from the upcoming season and interviews with many of the cast members
