I think it is a bad idea. Am I detecting a trend here? Sex in the City, Get Smart, and now Friends. What next Seinfeld? This might be the next new thing since reality television. Take an old cancelled or just plain ran its course television show and turn it into a theatrical production. Well let's see what about NYPD Blues, hell L.A. Law would make probably a good movie conceptually. The question becomes should it be a movie? Some small screen fare does not transfer well.
I adore Friends and I would definitely want to see a movie if it followed up where it left off. Monica and Chandler's move and the twins. Are Ross and Rachel still together?

I think Pjazzypar has some amazing points about what makes the transition to big screen or not.
I have loved some transitions, X-Files, Scooby Doo, Sex and the City (I'll post a review soon ok...?
But some sure do stink...I think Rock chick is seeing some of the potential of a screen version of FRIENDS...I want to know those things too. Do Pheobe and Marcel have a good life? Is Joey still in LA a famous actor by now (the spin off show resolved?)
So, in a nutshell...I voted "yes" for movie version.
I was the only one that totally hated that show, so I had to vote it a bad idea. Plus wouldn't it just be easier for Hollywood to come up with a decent script?

You probably nailed it for me. I just never really liked the show because I felt it was a rip off of another show that started a season or two earlier. Lisa Kudrow's character was the only funny one to me. By the way she is a riot in that movie P. S. I Love You. You are right, Hollywood needs some originality. First there was the game show craze, then the talk show craze, then the reality show craze, and now the remake a television show into a movie craze. Are we just a nation of crazed people?

Pjazzypar, are you thinking of the British sit-com "Coupling"? Friends is the U.S. franchise of the originally British show. I love "Coupling" it is hilarious...and still on re-runs and I watch them again.

Pjazzy: The rumors of "Friends" coming to the big screen can be directly tied to the success of the SATC movie. If they do make a Friends movie, fans of the show will be lined up to get their tickets. Having said that, I don't think the success of the SATC movie or a Friends reunion will start a trend to reunite the original casts of TV series on the big screen. Given the success of the "Star Trek" movies, it would've happened by now. Like you said, some TV shows do not transfer well.
SATC is one of those rare instances where there were enough fans who would pay money to see what happened to their favorite characters. I think that "Friends" and "Seinfeld" fall into that same category. However, I don't think Jerry would have any part of a "Seinfeld" reunion.
I put a movie like "Get Smart" in a different category because they don't use the original performers in the title roles. That's an adaptation (like Maverick, The Fugitive, and The Beverly Hillbillies) whereas SATC was basically a big screen sequel to the TV show.
The Rock Chick and Candy Minx: If they do a Friends reunion, it would be a follow-up like the SATC movie. As I said earlier, I know there are alot of fans like you who would pay to see what happened to the Friends gang.
Mistress of the D: In regards to your hatred of Friends, there are alot of people right there with you. Although I don't hate the show, I do feel that it's overrated. The way some people acted, you'd think that the creators of Friends had reinvented the comic wheel.
For Hollywood to come up with a decent script would take a bit of work. They figure "why should we do that when we can recycle something with a proven track record?"
Pjazzy: Along with thinking that it's overrated, I also harbor some resentment towards Friends. As me and you have discussed before and you alluded to in your last comment, Friends is basically a rip-off of "Living Single" (which debuted a year earlier). Both focus on twentysomething singles living in New York City. Not only that, but practically every main character on Living Single has a Friends counterpart:
Khadijah= Monica
Synclaire= Phoebe
Regine= Rachel
Overton= Joey
Kyle= Chandler
To the best of my knowledge, Friends didn't have a character who was always hanging around mooching (ala Max). I know that Living Single didn't have a wuss like Ross.
The thing that pisses me off is that some people might watch "Living Single" and think that it's a rip-off of "Friends"!
Candy Minx: In regards to your question to Pjazzy, see my comments above. The British version of "Coupling" premiered in 2000 (6 years after Friends). When I had BBC America, I watched "Coupling" a few times and found it very funny. When they made the U.S. version in 2003, I thought it sucked and deserved its fate of a quick cancellation.
I'm for it! :) I just want to see what the "gang' is up to!

But, for me, Friends is one of those shows where every episode makes me laugh.
Candy, I was talking about "Living Single". The creator of "Friends" was asked back in 1993, If there was any show on the air that he wished he had created and he stated "Living Single". The next year he had a clone of the show. I watched a few episodes of Friends and I said WTF! This is a rip-off!
I think it is a bad idea. There is no need for it to come back...in any form. Friends has out stayed their welcome.
Jessica: I can see how the curiosity factor of finding out what your fave characters are up to could be enticing.
The fact that "Friends" copied other shows didn't bother me that much. Like the saying goes, "Imitation is the sincerest form of television". The thing that did bother me is that some critics and fans heaped praise on it for being innovative. I have watched it a few times and found myself laughing out loud as well.
For the sake of TV history, one episode that I made sure to watch was the series finale. I was wondering what your thoughts on it were because I didn't find it all that funny. When Phoebe was yelling at Ross at the airport was particularly excruciating. I did think the final scene of the characters placing their keys on the counter was a nice touch. I also liked Chandler's last line in the show when he said "Where?" when the others suggest to go get coffee for a last time.
Shannon: It's sometimes best to leave the public wanting more and call it a day. The week of the series finale for "Friends", one of my co-workers at the time (who was a fan) wondered aloud what she was going to do on Thursday nights. Although I didn't say anything, I was thinking, "Gimme a fucking break. You have 10 years worth of episodes to watch in reruns. Do you expect the show to run forever?"
Oh, I like the idea - I liked Friends and it might be fun if they do a good job!
They've been doing remakes since movies began - and sometimes the remakes are better than the original (though admittedly, not often). There really is nothing new under the sun - everything in life is a remake, lol.
In hard times people do get nostalgic for the "good old days" so it's not surprising to see all these redos from the past.
I'm with Rock Chick - I'd love to see Monica and Chandler with kids - that's a movie in itself!

I'm in agreement with you. I was really disappointed with the series finale. I didn't find it funny at all, and very predictable.
I feel like a lot of television shows do that. It's like they have great writing for the life of the show, but when it comes to ending a story...they turn to crap. lol It's like a weird phenomena! :)
Ah, thanks Malcolm! I got my dates all confused I guess. I forgot about the show "Living Single"...I loved it.
