Thursday Thirteen #12: Special Guest Stars On the "New Scooby Doo Movies"

Since Thursday is the 38th anniversary of the debut of “Scooby Doo”, I decided to devote this week’s Thursday Thirteen to the Great Dane and his pals. Although the show has had many different formats over the years, my favorite was “The New Scooby Doo Movies”. The show aired in this incarnation from 1972-73 and featured a special guest star in each episode, who would help the gang solve the mystery of the week.

1. Don Adams
2. Sandy Duncan
3. Cass Elliot
4. The cast of “The Harlem Globetrotters”
5. Davy Jones
6. The cast of “Josie and the Pussycats”
7. Don Knotts
8. Jerry Reed
9. Sonny & Cher
10. The cast of “Speed Buggy”
11. The Three Stooges
12. Dick Van Dyke
13. Jonathan Winters

  3. Oh, my goodness! 38 years??? Scooby has been such a perennial part of my life that I thought it was MUCH older than that. Then again, by the time I was old enough to remember the episodes (you know, like four), the show was a couple of years old (you know, like four).

Nice of you to stop by my place tonight! I have to admit, I missed the pun on the first read, and it's not even that late yet!

  4. So I was about 12-13 and too cool for cartoons and missed this when they were on.

Scooby is a dude though and I enjoyed this cartoon when my kids were young.

  5. Wow, I don't think I've ever seen any of those episodes. The Don Adams one would have been so cool.

  7. Don Adams! My fave on this list.
By the way, the best new screen version of the Scooby Doo gang was in 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back'.

  9. Couldn't go wrong with the Globetrotters...I remember the one where they played to 10 spotting Scooby and the guys an eight point lead. After they scored, Meadowlark said the Globetrotters get a possession too, and the ball bounced in and out of the vase five times to tie it at 10.

  26. Your list has some very dark implications … Don Adams, dead; Cass Elliot, dead; Don Knotts, dead; Sonny Bono, dead … OMG! There's a Scooby Doo CURSE!

  27. I'm a radio announcer, and we actually talked on the air today about the Scooby-Doo anniversary! Who knew that so many celebs guest-starred?

    Cool list!

  28. A great list, once again. I actually remember some of those episodes.

  29. I loved Scooby Do, wasn't until I was older that I realized that Shaggy and Scooby were always STONED!!! That part cracks me up now.

In the movie(s) they made (with Sarah Michelle Geller & Freddie Prinze Jr) did you know that they were going to make it that Shaggy and Scooby were pot heads but the movie studio nixed that cuz they wanted it more Family like. I think they would have been better as a stoner movie.

    My TT is up too.

  30. I've always been a Scooby fan and I think I've seen every one of those! The Don Knots one is one of my faves.

  31. Oh yes. I remember the Scooby Doos with the guest stars(reruns). I loved Davy Jones....The Monkees reruns were also airing then. I suppose Mr. Jones was probably really about 40 or 50 years old when I thought he was such a cute teenager!

  32. Aww, I loved Scooby Doo! That was my favorite Saturday morning cartoon when I was a kid. They sure don't make them like that anymore, unfortunately. :-/
