Retro Commercial: Nyquil

Because it's been awhile since I have posted a retro commercial and due to the fact that a cold has been kicking my ass up and down since Friday, I decided to dig up this Nyquil commercial from the early 80s. Do you recognize the actor suffering from the "worst cold a human being ever had"?

Final Results of the Johnny Depp/Tim Burton Poll

By an overwhelming margin, Johnny Depp's first collaboration with Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands) was voted as your favorite the two have made together in the recent poll. Although it wouldn't have been my first choice (see below), I can see why it was for so many of you. In case you're wondering, it would have been my 2nd choice.

Given that it was the weakest box-office performer of their collaborations, I was surprised to see "Ed Wood" come in 2nd place. Had I voted, this would have been the movie I selected because I'm a sucker for movies about the movie industry (esp. if it's set in a previous time period). Also the fine acting throughout the movie and Tim Burton's attention to detail made this a winner in my eyes.

Another surprise was the showing of "Sweeney Todd" in the poll. Because it's the most recent of their teamings and it's box-office success, I thought that it would do a little better.

Bette Davis 100th Birthday Anniv. Tribute On TCM

Saturday April 5th marks what would have been Bette Davis' 100th birthday. In honor of the century milestone, Turner Classic Movies will have an all-day marathon of Bette's films starting at 6 AM EST. Among the films that TCM will be showing are: "The Petrified Forest", "The Letter", "Now, Voyager", "All About Eve", and "Dangerous". For the complete schedule and start times, please click here. The New Kids: Back On the Block

After several months of having the media and aging teenyboppers wondering "will they or won't they", the New Kids On the Block announced on Friday morning that they will all sleep with each other. Seriously, the "Right Stuff" quintet announced on NBC's "The Today Show" that they have reunited after an almost 15 year layoff. The reunion will include a tour and a new album.

I know to some, this announcement is another sign that the end of the world is nearer than we think. I think that for many guys, their feelings towards the Boston boy band depends on whether or not they had a girlfriend who was a New Kids On the Blockhead. Because my girlfriend at the time was in her early 20s during the New Kids' peak, she wasn't shrieking the names of Joey, Jordan, Donnie, etc. Therefore, I didn't hate them the way some of my younger male counterparts did. Although my girlfriend liked some of their songs, she was more into such sophisticated fare as Paula Abdul and Milli Vanilli.

Great Web Find: Hulu.com

I thought I would take a break from watching an episode of "Fame" and enjoying a slice of peanut butter pie to tell you about this new online video service I recently discovered (thank you Entertainment Weekly) called Hulu.com. Launching on March 12th of this year, Hulu.com allows you to view streaming video of TV shows/specials/sporting events and movies (most of which are the property of NBC and FOX) free of charge.

Not only can you watch current shows such as "House", "The Office", and "The Riches", but you can also check out old series as well. So far, I have watched episodes of "Doogie Howser, M.D.", "Nanny and the Professor", "McHale's Navy", "Ironside", as well as some of my favorite sketches from "In Living Color". Some of the movies offered include "The 40 Year Old Virgin", "Hollywood Shuffle", "Some Like It Hot", "The Usual Suspects" and "Office Space". Hulu.com also offers the option of watching content "full screen".

In addition to being free, one of the great things about Hulu.com is that the content is provided by the studios themselves; meaning that the audio/video quality is very good. Although it isn't as good as traditional TV, it's way better than what you'll find on You Tube.

Along with what I mentioned above, you can also do searches to find out if content is available. Although they obviously don't have everything, they are adding new content on a regular basis. If Hulu.com doesn't have a program (such as "Lost"), it tells you where you can view it online. Hulu.com is ad-supported, so there are some commercials. But when it's free, who cares?! In case you are wondering what the hell "hulu" means, according to Wikipedia the name comes from a Mandarin Chinese proverb, in which it means holder of precious things.

I have barely scratched the surface as far the programming available on Hulu.com. Since I have to get back to work, I'll have to finish that episode of "Fame" later tonight. However, I am having another slice of peanut butter pie!
