Thursday Thirteen #42: My DVD Collection

Using Thirteen DVDs in my collection to spell out my name.

This week's Thursday Thirteen theme is all about the alphabet. The authors of the Thursday Thirteen site asked us to choose a letter of the alphabet and write thirteen words that describe us that begin with that letter. Since my blog is pop culture based, I had planned to use the first letter of my first name and pick out some of my favorite things in the world of music, movies, and TV using that letter.

However, on the way home from work Tuesday evening, I came up with another idea. Since my first and last names equal 13 letters, I decided to use that baker's dozen to list some of the DVDs in my collection. If you were to take the first letter from each DVD title below, it would spell my name.


1. Murder My Sweet- This 1944 mystery features former song and dance man Dick Powell in the lead role of private eye Phillip Marlowe. On the trail of a hulking ex-con's girl, Marlowe runs into all sorts of trouble and periodically has to deal with the dreaded bottomless black pool opening up at his feet.
















2. All the King's Men- This 1949 Best Picture winner features a dynamic Oscar-winning performance by Broderick Crawford as a politician whose increasing corruptness is in lockstep with his rise to power. The features a top-notch cast, including John Ireland, Joanne Dru, John Derek, and Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Mercedes McCambridge.


















3. Lean On Me- One of the best of the "educator who reaches delinquent kids" films, Morgan Freeman is outstanding as New Jersey high school principal Joe Clark.

















4. Claudine- This underrated 1974 comedy drama stars James Earl Jones and Diahann Carroll as a garbage man and a single working mother of six trying to make a relationship work despite overwhelming obstacles. This film also has an outstanding soundtrack with Gladys Knight and the Pips performing songs written and produced by Curtis Mayfield.

















5. Odd Couple Season One- Arguably, Jack Klugman and Tony Randall were the best sitcom duo in TV history.

















6. Legally Blonde- When I bought my first DVD player over 5 years ago, I rented this one weekend when I was recovering from dental surgery. My favorite scene is how Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) reacts when she learns that a prank was played on her and the shindig she is attending is a not a costume party. The copy of "Legally Blonde" that I have was part of a prize package that I won from Sports Radio 1130 WDFN last year.

















7. Mo' Better Blues- This 1990 Spike Lee joint (who also appears as the jazz band's manager with a gambling problem) stars Denzel Washington as a trumpet player who can't decide between two women. Wesley Snipes and Samuel L. Jackson also have supporting roles; as a bandmate/rival of Denzel's and a legbreaker for a bookie, respectively.
















8. Bound- This sexy mystery stars Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon as a moll and an ex-con who hook up romantically and plot to steal money from the mob. I remember watching this with a lady friend a few years ago and she turned away during a scene involving fingers and wire cutters. I can hardly blame her.

















9. Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War On Journalism- This revealing documentary demonstrates the alleged conservative bias employed by the Fox News Channel. Depending on your point of view, you will think that this is a "fair and balanced" portrayal or a complete hatchet job.


















10. Naked Gun Gift Set- This set features all 3 of the hilarious films in the "Naked Gun" franchise starring Leslie Nielsen, Priscilla Presley, O.J. Simpson, and George Kennedy.
















11. Days of Wine and Roses- Oscar nominees Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick star in this 1962 drama about a young couple whose lives are torn apart by alcoholism. Although alcoholism isn't necessarily a laughing matter, this film does feature some bits of humor to offset the seriousness.
















12. Out of the Past- This 1947 film noir stars Robert Mitchum as a private eye and Jane Greer as one of the most duplicitous femme fatales you are likely to see.

















13. Naked City: New York To L.A.: One of the reasons that I love the DVD format is that it gives new life to old series that never show up in reruns anymore. Originally airing on ABC from 1958-1963, this police drama often featured up-and-coming performers in guest-starring roles. Martin Sheen, Peter Fonda, and Rip Torn are some of the actors who appear in the 4 episodes included on this single-disc set.

Heart On A&E's Private Sessions

Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart

Earlier this morning, I was watching a repeat of the A&E live music/interview program "Private Sessions". If you haven't checked it out, you should give it a try. It's an excellent way to get your Sunday off to a good start. This morning they reaired an episode from 2007 featuring Heart. Along with Heart classics such as "Barracuda" and "Crazy On You", they also performed the Led Zeppelin standard "Immigrant Song" and the John Lennon tune "Isolation". These latter two selections were from Ann Wilson's 2007 solo CD (her first) "Hope & Glory".

Interspersed with the music performances were Ann & Nancy Wilson's informal interview with host Lynn Hoffman. The two sisters talked about their musical influences (Led Zeppelin, Aretha, etc.), their upbringing as military brats, and some of the crazy things that have happened to them over the course of their long career. Ann & Nancy also mentioned that they are working on a new Heart album. When this episode was taped last year, they said that the album may be released in 2008 or 2009.

Below is a clip of Heart performing the song that opened up the episode of "Private Sessions", their 1976 hit "Crazy On You". Ann's voice has lost none of its power and I have always loved to watch Nancy do her kicks and spins when she plays guitar. If Nancy had a penis, I think that she would get the credit she deserves for being a first-rate guitar player.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes For My Radio Show

Effective May 2nd, my radio show will air every Friday night from 7-9 PM EST on WKUF-LP 94.3 FM. I think the timeslot change will be good for the show, giving it more exposure. Not only that, but doing the show on Friday nights will free up my weekends. Since the only evening slot open was for 2 hours, my show will now be an hour shorter. Although I loved doing 3 hours, it was sometimes a struggle prepping a show of that length. Having said that, if a suitable 3 hour slot opens up at some point down the line, I'll probably take it.

Along with the timeslot change, my show will also have a new name. Spin City is going in the trash heap. Going forward, my show will be known as The Retro Mix. Even before I thought about moving to a new timeslot, I had been pondering a change to the show's name. When I first started on WKUF in January 2005, the genres of music I played varied from show-to-show (I'd play neo-soul one week, 80s alternative the next week, oldies from the 50s and 60s after that, etc.). When I switched to a 70s and 80s format in January 2006, I should have changed the name of the show then... but that's neither here nor there. The Retro Mix better reflects what my show is about and has been for the last 2-plus years.

New Blog Alert: Extensive Music Trivia

After visiting Layla's Classic Rock Faves the other day, I found a new blog called Extensive Music Trivia. This should be alot of fun for all of us music trivia buffs. The following text explains the games/rules and is taken directly from the blog author's first post:

Questions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Answers on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

All questions will be based on artists or songs that have been on the Billboard charts. The artist will have had to place on the charts at one time in their career in some capacity to qualify.

All questions and answers have been thoroughly researched and will originate from 1951 to present, with the majority originating between 1956 – 1986. Megan Fox Tops FHM's Sexiest Women List

Actress Megan Fox ("Transformers", "Hope & Faith") tops FHM magazine's list of the sexiest women in the world. Fox is moving up in the eyes of FHM readers; she debuted on the annual list in 2006 at No. 68 and came in at No. 65 the following year. Some of the other women on the Hot 100 include:

Final Results of the Recent Catwoman Poll

Proving that an indelible performance stands the test of time, Eartha Kitt was the easy winner in the recent favorite Catwoman poll. Eartha definitely chose an apt surname because even when she wasn't playing Catwoman she had that "feline thing" about her.

Starting slowly but picking up steam as the poll progressed was the support for Michelle Pfeiffer. I didn't see all of "Batman Returns" so I can't judge her performance. However, if the one scene I remember of her kicking ass in an alley is any indication, I would say she did just fine.

The actress who I thought was going to come in 1st or 2nd (Julie Newmar) finished respectably in 3rd place. My reasoning behind thinking Julie would finish higher is because she was the first actress to portray Catwoman onscreen and because she appeared in the role more than anyone else.

Although the movie tanked at the box office, Halle Berry's portrayal of Catwoman had her share of fans and made a decent showing in 4th place. Even though I don't like watching feature films on commercial TV, I might make an effort to check out "Catwoman" because the Oxygen Channel has been showing it lately.

I was glad to see Lee Meriwether get at least one vote in the poll. Her 5th place finish in the poll didn't surprise me given that her one appearance as "Catwoman" (in the 1966 film "Batman") isn't as well known today as the other actresses' portrayals.
