The Retro Mix Playlist For 10/22/10

Show theme: Classic alternative

On this week's show, I was once again joined by my friend Denise as we spun some of our favorite classic alternative songs from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.  In between tunes, Denise and I had some fun exchanges and told stories as they related to the music we played.   Some of the stories/topics included:
  • Our feeling that the early to mid 90s era of alternative music was the last great period in rock.
  • One of the all-time great comedies, "Clerks" and the scene where Dante learns of his girlfriend's extensive experience providing oral pleasure.
  • How it's been fun for both of us exposing each other to our respective selections during both shows.
  • The lack of prominent female rockers in the late 80s and how the alternative rock genre is more receptive to ladies who rock.
It was a blast having Denise on the show.  Like Pjazzy said on my Facebook page, Denise is a natural.  In addition to the awesome tunes she selected, Denise brought a wealth of knowledge and energy to the show.  Although we don't have a firm date, I will be having Denise back on the show again.  She's even open to doing a show featuring oldies of the 50s and 60s!

The Retro Mix Playlist For 10/15/10

Show theme: Classic Alternative

On this week's show, I was joined by my friend Denise who shared some of her favorite classic alternative songs as well.  In between tunes, Denise and I had some fun exchanges and told stories as they related to the music we played.   Some of the stories/topics included:

How the front and rear cover art for the Tripping Daisy album I Am an Elastic Firecracker scared the hell out of me. Click (if you dare) on the link and see if it has the same effect on you.

The story of the trouble I experienced getting tickets for the R.E.M. "Monster tour and how the rear stage seats me and my friends had to settle for weren't as bad as I thought they would be.

Denise shared a story of how she wound up with a cartoon-sized lump on her head after being kicked by a crowd surfer at a Jane's Addiction concert in 1997

I mentioned that John Doe (lead singer/bassist for the band X) went on to have a movie career, appearing in such films as "Great Balls of Fire" and " Road House".  I also presented my theory that if you turn your TV to the cable channel AMC at any given time, you have a 33.6% chance of catching "Road House".

We talked how alternative music is such a wide-ranging genre that it's sometimes hard to define.

Denise explained how the Pearl Jam song "Footsteps" and the Temple of the Dog tune "Times of Trouble" are essentially the same track.

Suffice it to say, I had a lot of fun having Denise on the show.  Because 3 hours is not even close to enough time to fit in all the great classic alternative tunes we wanted to, Denise will be joining me again on 10/22. The Retro Mix airs Fridays from 6-9 pm EST on WKUF LP, 94.3 FM.  If you live outside the WKUF listening area, you can hear us online by visiting the URL below and clicking on the "Listen" link at the top of the page:

Pop Culture Trivia #108: The Spooky Edition 2: I Have Nothing In Regards To A Clever Subtitle

For this sequel to a quiz I posted last year, it's once again all about ghosts, witches, mass murderers, etc. as all the questions have ties to the horror/thriller/fantasy/supernatural genres.

For those who have played Pop Culture Trivia in the past, there are two new rules:

1. The first person to submit their answers to me will earn 3 bonus pts.

2. I will no longer be posting the answers (along with the names of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers) here.  Instead, I will email the answers (along with the names of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers) only to those who take the quiz.

If you are a Pop Culture Trivia virgin about to be touched for the very first time, please read the remaining rules before taking the quiz:

* Along with the Internet, the use of books, magazines, notes, data stored on a computer, etc. to help you come up with the answers is not allowed.

* Please read the questions carefully. For example, if you mistakenly give a performer's name instead of the movie/TV show, the answer will be marked as incorrect.

* If you give a final answer along the lines of "If it isn't The Stepfather, it's Mother's Day", it will be marked as incorrect.

* Unless I ask for the correct spelling, you won't lose points for any misspellings as long as I can decipher your answer. If I have no idea what you mean, I'll email you for verification. If I don't hear from you, your answer will be marked as incorrect.

* It's best to provide the full name/title of an answer if you know it. However, for TV series, movies, people, etc. that are often referred to by a shortened name/abbreviation, that shortened name/abbreviation is acceptable (unless I specifically ask for the complete name/title).

* Billboard-related questions will always refer to the U.S. charts.

* If you are the only player to get a particular question correct, you earn 5 bonus points

* Please do not post your answers in the comments section. Instead, send them to ultfan@gmail.com no later than Friday, October 29th at 11:59 PM EST.

* To make it easier for me to add up your score, please cut and paste the game into the body of an email and type your answers after the point value of each question.

Have fun, good luck, and don't look behind you!
