Tuesday Tunes: Week 131

Since this weekend is Mother's Day, that's the theme for this week:

Who do you think is the coolest rock mom? Natalie Merchant- Natalie's latest project (the concept album Leave Your Sleep) was inspired by her desire to expose her young daughter to complex poetry. I think it's great when parents take an active role in educating their children at a young age.

What rocker mom are you really glad, isn't your mom? Courtney Love- No explanation necessary.

Do you think you'd like to be the child of a rock n' roll mom? Yes. I'm optimistic that most rock and roll moms veer towards the Natalie Merchant end of the spectrum. Although there would likely be some drawbacks, I think the good would outweigh the bad.

Tuesday Tunes, Week 129: Radio, Radio!

This week's theme is "Radio"...

Radio inspired many songs, what is your favorite? "Life Is A Rock, But the Radio Rolled Me" by Reunion

Do you still listen to the radio? Why/Why not?

Yes, because I like to take a break from listening to CDs while in my car. I also enjoy the feeling of discovering a song or hearing one that I haven't heard in awhile. In addition to listening in the car, I also occasionally stream stations at home (this is how I listen to the classic alternative show "Time Warp with Cristina" Sunday mornings from 8-noon on 89X.)

What's your favorite station? WDRQ, 93.1 (aka "Doug FM"). It's format is "Variety Hits".

Are there any songs you discovered on the radio? Yes.

What are they? Although the number of songs is countless, a recent one comes to mind: "He's Mine" by The Platters. I was listening to Little Walter's Time Machine a couple of Saturdays ago and heard it. It's the only single of theirs I know of that features the female member (Zola Taylor) on lead vocals. I didn't even know the song existed, but I looked it up and found that it reached #23 pop and #5 R&B.

Top 5 On Friday - Week 226

This week's topic came from Russ

Top 5 band members that are neither the lead singer or the lead guitarist. (feel free to tell us why you chose them too!)

1. Keith Moon of The Who- A great combination of skill and showmanship.

2. Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band- In addition to his wailing sax, Clarence is arguably the heart and soul of the E Streeters.

3. Michael Steele of The Bangles- Along with her musicianship and songwriting skills, I also like Michael's wry sense of humor (which she displayed in the Behind the Music episode on The Bangles)

4. Jerome Benton of The Time- The best mirror holder in the biz!

5. Valerie Smith of Josie & the Pussycats- She played the meanest tambourine this side of Davy Jones!

Tuesday Tunes: Week 103

The theme this week is concerts:
What's the best concert you've attended? Lollapalooza '94- The lineup included The Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, The Breeders, George Clinton & the P-Funk All-Stars, and Smashing Pumpkins.

Note: The ticket stub below isn't mine (I found it on Google Images). My stub (for the Saturday show at Pine Knob in Clarkston, MI) is packed away somewhere.

What's your dream concert lineup?
James Brown

Jackie Wilson

Otis Redding

Yes, I know they are all dead. This is a dream remember?

Smallest/largest concert you've attended:

Smallest: Felix Cavaliere at a Novi auto show in the early 2000s. It was a fantastic show and I got a chance to meet him and get his autograph (on my 2-CD Rascals Anthology) afterward.

Largest: The Police at The Palace of Auburn Hills in 2007. One of the cool things about that show was seeing people of various ages (teens through the 50s) in attendance.

One artist you'd like to see in concert: John Mellencamp- I've heard that he puts on a dynamite show!

3 songs you can't get enough of right now

Ashes by Embrace

Did You See Me Coming? by Pet Shop Boys

You Get What You Give by New Radicals

2 artists you'd like to recommend to us.

Judee Sill- A first-rate singer/songwriter from the early 1970s, Sill only released two albums during her short lifetime.

JoBoxers- A British-American pop band fronted by U.S. born Dig Wayne (far right) and best known for their hit Just Got Lucky, they released two albums before calling it quits in 1985.

JoBoxers- Is This Really the First Time:

1 album you can't wait to purchase:

None... I don't buy albums/CDs anymore

Tuesday Tunes: Week 69

Tuesday Tunes: Week 69
One question this week:

Tell us your biggest musical regret.

I regret that I didn't take the opportunity to meet Motown star Martha Reeves a few years ago. She came to do an on-air interview at the AM station where I worked. I knew about the Sunday afternoon interview a day in advance and considered going. However, once Sunday came around, the 40 minute drive to the station wasn't all that appealing. Plus, a less than flattering anecdote that I read about Ms. Reeves in a Motown-related book made me reluctant as well. Suffice it to say, my co-worker informed me later that Ms. Reeves displayed no diva-like behavior when she came to the station.

Top 5 On Friday: Week 210

Top 5 songs that horrify you! (And tell us why)
Interpret as you see fit

1. They're Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Haa! by Napoleon XIV- I still get freaked out by the sparse instrumentation and increasingly manic vocals on this 1966 hit (yes, it peaked at # 3 nationally). Thankfully, someone posted this song on You Tube so that those unfamiliar can listen below.

2. Revolution No. 9 by The Beatles- In my opinion, the worst track to ever appear on a Beatles album.

3. Tutti Frutti by Pat Boone- If you want to hear a ballad in the vein of Love Letters In the Sand or April Love, Pat's your man. However, he has no business going anywhere near a rock and roll classic such as this. What makes the crime even more heinous is that Pat's version (#12) bested Little Richard's original (#17) on the Billboard charts.

4. The discofied version of There's No Business Like Show Business by Ethel Merman (or practically any track off of Merman's 1979 disco album)- R&B and rock stars jumping on the bandwagon was one thing, but when Broadway met Studio 54 you knew the disco train had completely gone off the tracks. Even as a kid when I saw Ethel perform on Dance Fever, I knew something was wrong about the whole thing. Still, The Ethel Merman Disco Album is the audio equivalent of a bad car accident. No matter how horrible it is, it's next to impossible not to listen for a bit.

5. The Loco-Motion by Grand Funk- After hearing this travesty, one can imagine songwriters Gerry Goffin and Carole King yelling "Look what those sons of bitches did to our song ma!"

If you'd like to take part by posting your Top 5 "You" songs on your blog, visit Music Memoirs and leave your link in the comments sections so that others can visit you. If you aren't a blogger but would still like to participate, feel free to leave your top 5 in the comments section of this post.
