The Retro Mix Playlist For 4/15/11

Show theme: 70s and 80s R&B

For this show, one of my brothers (Bobby) co-hosted with me and he did a helluva job!  In addition to sounding natural, he did his homework by providing interesting background info on some of the artists he picked to feature on the show. Along with the old school R&B tunes selected by me and Bobby, the listeners also contributed with their requests. Coincidentally, two of the listeners (a friend of the family and an old friend of mine) requested songs that were already going to be part of the playlist (Misty Blue and Single Life, respectively).

Bobby also shared some personal stories throughout the show:
  • While in Memphis once, he was able to watch AWB tuning up/jamming in an alley before their concert (which he also attended).
  • His previous radio experience: While attending Williams Elementary, he was part of a program sponsored by WAMM-AM 1420 (Flint's premier soul station for several years) where students came to the station and worked the equipment, did sound checks, etc. Later on as a student at Lowell Junior High, he was part of a similar program at WFBE (the public radio station which was located in Central High School).  I had no idea about Bobby's prior experience at WAMM or WFBE so it was fascinating for me to hear!
Bobby and I are looking forward to the next time he joins me in the studio as co-host. At the end of the show, we discussed on the air the them for our next show together: an all 70s show!

It was my pleasure, truly. I was so happy and it just got better with each song!! I was listening with a friend who's favorite genre of music is hard rock. She swore she wasn't going to know a single song. Then Parliament came on (we were a little late - 1st song we heard was Oh Sheila) and she said "Hey, I know this song!" Then Mr. Big Stuff came on and she said "I used to roller skate to this song!" Then Cisco Kid came on and by then she was snapping her fingers and getting into the groove!! Looking forward to the next time you join Malcolm, Bobby!
