Thursday Thirteen #67: Great Sing-Along Songs

Whether you are in your car alone or putting back a few with a bar full of people, it doesn't get much better than using nearly all your lung capacity to belt out one of your favorite tunes. Even if all you know is the chorus, it doesn't matter. Below are 13 tunes to which it's almost impossible not to sing along to.

What are some of your favorite sing-along songs? Feel free to list them in the comments section.

1. Brown Eyed Girl- Van Morrison: Do you remember when, we used to sing, Sha la la la la la la la la la la te da

2. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap- AC/DC (when you yell the line "done dirt cheap", it's mandatory that you pump your fist 3 times for each word)

3. Friends In Low Places- Garth Brooks: How many of you slip into your "drunk voice" when singing this song?

4. Happy Together- The Turtles: I can't see me loving nobody but you for all my life...

5. Hey Jude- The Beatles

6. I Love Rock and Roll- Joan Jett & the Blackhearts

7. Lights- Journey: When the lights go down in the city. And the sun shines on the bayay. Ooh I want to be thereereere in my citay...

8. Piano Man- Billy Joel

9. Purple Rain- Prince

10. Saturday Night- The Bay City Rollers: S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night! S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night!

11. Sweet Caroline- Neil Diamond: Hands, touching hands. Reachin' out... touchin' me, touchin' you! Sweet Caroline, bah bah bah!! good times never seemed so good...

12. We Are the Champions/We Will Rock You- Queen

13. What's Up?- 4 Non Blondes: and I say hey-ey-ey-ey-ey... hey-ey-ey... I said hey, what's going on?!

Here is Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond, with the lyrics to help you sing along:

This is great and is going to leave lots of songs lingering in my mind all night long!! Sweet Caroline seems to be sticking the most! I need to be more creative next week!!!

And by the way, totally jammed with Neil (with the help of your lyics)! What concerns me most about that is not the fact that my toes where tapping and I was belting out the tunes like I was in a bar (and I am sober) BUT the fact that nobody in my house even batted an eye in my direction!!!

Hey, what a great list. I couldn't disagree with any of your choices (except for the ones I don't know), and now I'm going to have most of them taking turns running through my head all night.

The Cowboy Song - Thin Lizzy
The Show - Doug E Fresh
Sweet Child o' Mine - Guns n Roses
Misty Mountain Hop - Zep
When I'm With You - Tony Terry
She Came in Through The Bathroom Window - Joe Cocker
We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off - Jermaine Stewart
Never Too Much - Luther
Midas Touch - Midnight Star

Ok, I'm stopping now...I could go on and on and on!

Great list, Malcolm, although I am a Neil Diamond free zone :-)

Love your list! Especially Friends in Low Places. Here are three that my friends and I have been known to sing along to:

New York, New York -- Frank Sinatra

Back in My Arms Again -- The Supremes ("Flo, she don't know, cuz the boy she loves is a Romeo.")

Why Don't We Get Drunk & Screw -- Jimmy Buffett

Fun list. Now all of those songs are stuck in my head, all at the same time. As if it weren't messy enough in there already. LOL.

Happy TT!

Nope, I don't succumb to Garth -- but I might if I'd ever heard the song. But the others... maybe.

I have to admit I was reading your list and hearing the songs playing along in my head, and no matter where I am, Wal-Mart, The Mall, A Bar, if Queen or Journey comes on I am most definitely singing.

A really good list.

Mine would also include You Give Love a Bad Name by Bon Jovi, She Hates Me by Puddle of Mudd, and Sublime's What I Got.

Just about any Bob Marley is sing along worthy.

All of these are great sing-a-longs. I'm with you. Brown-Eyed Girl's on my list too. Happy TT!

I will sing along to anything with a tune :) I even sing along to the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack, and I don't even know what they're saying!

I have no favorites. I actually feel the concept is pretty cheesy, unless I have had a few drinks *wink*. YMCA or Macho Man by the Village People come to mind for some reason.

I got to work a Neil Dimond Concert and heard him sing Sweet Caroline live what an experience.

Thanks for the great TT list. I'm just glad I had my iPod on while I read it otherwise I would have ended up with a bunch of songs humming about in my head.

You chose great songs. Van Morrison is awesome, one of my fav sing along songs of his would be Moondance. I just love singing along in my car, people always give me odd looks, :-). Happy TT!

Candy Minx said...

I know most of those songs.

There was a time when anyone who got married in family had a reception and "Sweet Caroline" would play to or three times during the dancing.

What a great list! Everyone looks so young! Love this. Thanks and Happy TT.

Great list - of course now these songs will be floating around in my head for the rest of the day!

Desparado and Hotel California (Eagles) and Paradise by the Dashboard Lights (Meatloaf) come to mind.

I remember 4, 5, 11 and 12, though I don't know if I ever sang along with them.

What a great idea for TT! Now I got those songs playin' in my head. :)

Great T13! I love to sing (offkey) to most of those myself!

Great songs-I always like to sing along to "American Pie"

Happy Together is one of my favorite songs to listen or sing to.

I have to tell you my favorite song to sing to: "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy". My number two would be "Y.M.C.A."

Riding up and down Broadway
on my old stud Leroy
And the girls say
Save a horse, ride a cowboy.
Everybody says
Save a horse, Ride a cowboy. . .at the Y.M.C.A!

Jen: "Sweet Caroline" is having the same effect on me. I'm glad that your family didn't bat an eye when you were singing and tapping along. Maybe they will join in next time.

Marcia: When I'm singing along to "Hey Jude", I sometimes find myself doing both the "Na na na na na na na" chorus and Paul's "Hey Judy Judy Judy Judy wow" parts.

Jenn: I'm glad to hear this list brought you some singing pleasure.

Jessica: Because I've added 90s music to my show, I've been meaning to download "Friends In Low Places" so I can play it. Not only that, but it's a cool song to have anyway.

On A Limb w/ Claudia: You sing along to much cooler songs you say? I'll bet you mean Celine Dion and Michael Bolton. :-)

Betty: A couple of years ago I heard some ladies at a bar singing along to "What's Up?" It was cool because I like to see people cut loose on the weekend.

Feefifoto: Thanks for stopping by.

Janet: Thanks for sharing your choices for great sing along songs. Although I haven't done it, I can picture myself singing along to "The Show" and "Sweet Child O' Mine".

Chris and Jehara: Thanks!

The Gal Herself: Thanks for posting some of your choices. "Back In My Arms Again" is one of my favorite Supremes songs. I love the sax work and the fact that Diana name checks Mary and Flo.

Adelle: "Yellow Submarine" is an excellent choice! I almost included it on this list, but didn't because I wanted to limit it to one entry per artist.

Kandyblossom: My head gets cluttered a lot too. I think a spring cleaning is in order.

Thornesworld: Thanks!

Susan: Watch out, "Friends In Low Places" is likely to reel you in.

Angel: Thanks for coming clean about your singing tendencies. When we went to see Journey in concert a few years ago, I was surprised at the number of their songs that I knew well enough to sing along to.

Bryan: Thanks! Bob Marley came this close to making my list. I remember that we used to sing along to nearly every track on "Legend" when I had the cassette version years ago. I finally got around to getting it on CD a few weeks ago.

Brenda: Not only is a great sing-along song, but "Brown Eyed Girl" has some good air guitar parts too.

Carmen: Now that's funny because I do the same thing sometime.

Pjazzy: A little liquid encouragement always helps. The two Village People songs you listed almost made the cut of this T13.

Randilin: Seeing Neil do "Sweet Caroline" live would be cool as hell.

Rikki: I sing along in my car all the time. I guess I am too busy singing to notice if I am getting odd looks from people.

Candy: "Sweet Caroline" seems to be the consensus favorite on this list.

Eileen: Thanks for visiting!

Debbie: Paradise by the Dashboard Lights is a damn good choice! "Well let me sleep on it, baby baby let me sleep on it..."

Nicholas: If you don't remember, that might mean that you had a real good time!

Recovery and Anesthezea: Thanks for stopping by!

Cindy: As much as I dislike "American Pie", I can totally see it being a great sing along tune for many.

Pop Art Diva: "Happy Together" is one of those songs that is not only a great sing along tune, but has some good air instrument parts too (the drum part leading up to "I can't see me loving nobody but you for all my life").
