Normally I stay away from politics on this blog. However, I feel that Barack Obama's historic win in the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election is worthy of discussion. When it became official that Obama would be the next President of the U.S., I was reminded of something that I hadn't thought of in a few years. My introduction to Obama was when he gave the keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. After listening to him, I said that if an African American has a legitimate shot at becoming President of the U.S., it's him.
One thing that has distressed me over the last several years is the divisiveness of this country. I've been trying to figure out when things started to go wrong. I don't think it can be traced to one particular event, but I would say that a big part of it can be blamed on our involvement in an unpopular war, the feelings by many that the media doesn't fairly represent their political viewpoint, and the venom spewed by some of the media outlets. Unfortunately, this has spilled over into the blogosphere. Over the past few months, some of the things I've read on blogs have taken dishonesty and ugliness to a new level (or should I say depth). Not only that, but on Halloween, a woman in suburban Detroit refused to give candy to Obama supporters or their children! I was like, "lady, are you out of your fuckin' mind?!" Regardless of one's political beliefs, I'd like to think that we are all in agreement that we need to come together and truly be The United States of America. I'm confident that President-Elect Obama will be able to build that bridge.
In keeping with the pop culture angle of my blog, below is a clip from when the then Senator Barack Obama appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show.

It was a lot of fun in Harlem tonight. :)
We partied at my house last night after I canvased a rather dicey area for Obama :)
What a night! I am so pleased!
I just love that clip. :)
Such a historic day. :) I agree with you on the divisiveness of the country. And the media is definitely has a lot to do with it. I hope Obama can bring us together.
Hey Malcolm, It's turned I just as I figured. I visited can u b right after it was made official and it was quiet and sad over in them parts.
I can honestly say that last night was the first time I've ever had chills listening to a politician.
He has sparked a feeling of hope and pride in this country that I hope lasts for many years to come.
On a lighter note, I watched both Michelle and Barack Obama's appearances on Ellen, and I really enjoyed them. They are just so down to earth and naturally funny.
I like when Michelle shares candid stories about the two girls. My favorite was when she said that Maleia thought that the 'big surprise' of the night (which was actually that her father was going to be at the event on stage) was that the Jonas Brothers were going to be there. (You can see her mouthing "the Jonas Brothers??") What a normal preteen thing to be thinking.
She and Sasha are a little too young to realize what a huge deal it is that their father is the first African American President of the United Sates...but isn't it also kind of cool that their generation will be growing up in a country that has finally begun to truly judge others "not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
Well said, enjoy it.
Good post, brother Malcolm...
I am just now coming out of my "Obama coma" from last night...I'm still aglow with pride and humility...I have purposely stayed away from the anti-Obama sites because I don't want them to stifle my joy.
I love this clip of O on Ellen...classic!
I am thrilled. I watched it with a friend who was in San Fran with his wife and all three of us cried :)
It's a proud day for America.
Yipppe ky yah!!!! Whooo Hoooo!!!!
What amazing evening and all the follow up coverage...what a week!!!!!
Beckeye: I saw shots of Harlem on the news that night and I wish I could have been down there. Is that where you live now or were you just hanging out?
Mistress of the D: By "dicey area", do you mean that area of PA that Rep. John Murtha said would be difficult for Obama to win over? If so, I'll bet it was dicey as hell after Obama was announced as the winner.
The Rock Chick: Although there is still a ways to go, Obama's victory showed that things may be headed in the right direction.
Jessica: Because I'm at work when it's on and don't bother recording it, I only catch Ellen's show if I happen to take time off during the week. You might know that I love her dance segment.
Over the past few days, I've read some of the right-wing blogs to get their take on the election. Although there were plenty of sour grapes to go around, some of the bloggers did say that although they weren't happy with the outcome, they were still going to support Obama, pray for him, etc.
Pjazzy: Yes, you were a less skeptical than me because I was still expecting some last minute bombshell by the Republicans. I actually visited canube's blog the following morning and could have sworn that I saw a tumbleweed blow across the screen.
Thriving: I think that the moment that Obama was announced the winner will go down as one of those "where were you when..." moments in history. I liked that Malia/Jonas Brothers story... I wish I had seen that part. I don't know if you saw it, but there is a clip where Barack and Michelle and some others are talking about a bet that Barack has with Malia about the Jonas Brothers. Here is the link:

Good call on the Malia and Sasha not yet fully realizing the impact of what happened the other night. They might answer "yes" if someone asked them, but it'll probably be a few years before they are able to put it in perspective. Did you know that when Malia and Sasha move into the White House, they will be the youngest residents since 9 yr old Amy Carter in 1977.
Clnmike: Thanks!
Ms. Marvulus: Thank you very much! I can understand why you stayed away from the anti-Obama blogs. As for me, I couldn't help visiting them... they gave me a good laugh.
Barbara: Oh yeah, there were a lot of tears shed (both of joy and sadness) the other night. I'm glad that you were in the former category.
Bryan: Yes indeed. This is something that I never thought I would live to see.
Candy: I love that enthusiasm! I was wondering how the news of the Obama victory was being covered in Canada.
I think it's going to be so fun to watch the girls grow up in the White House. Thanks for the link!
Here's the link to when our future First Lady was on Ellen (the Jonas Brothers thing is around the four minute mark).
oops. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngqUSlVQfbY
Thriving Holly: No problem. Thank you for the link. I like the dance that Michelle did when she came out on stage (brushing off her shoulders). That clip of Malia mouthing The Jonas Brothers at the DNC was priceless!
