Please Take A Moment To Vote In the Current Annoying Celeb of 2009 Poll... Thank You.

If you are a fan of The Twilight Zone, you are no doubt familiar with the episode titled "It's A Good Life". In it, a six-year old boy named Anthony Fremont held a town in terror with his godlike mental powers. One of his powers was the ability to "wish" people into the cornfield, never to be seen again.

For this poll, you get to pretend to be Anthony and wish the most annoying celeb(s) of 2009 into the cornfield. The six I selected are (clockwise, top left) : Heidi Montag & Spencer Pratt, Kanye West, Carrie Prejean, and Jon & Kate Gosselin.

Because you may feel that someone besides the sextet of annoyance I selected are more cornfield-worthy, you can vote "Other" and list the celeb's name in the comments section.

Remembering the Celebs We Lost In 2009

Along with preparing to say hello to a new decade, it's also time to pay tribute to those we lost in the world of entertainment this year. Below is a tribute assembled by TCM of film industry people who we said goodbye to in 2009. The montage is set to the tune "To Live Is To Fly" by Steve Earle.

The link below takes you to a photo gallery of celebs (including those outside the film industry) that we said goodbye to in 2009.

Happy Birthday To Mike Nesmith and Davy Jones of The Monkees

Wednesday Dec. 30th marks the birthdays of both Mike Nesmith and Davy Jones of the Monkees (they turn 67 and 64, respectively). As some of you may know, the Monkees' 4th album Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, & Jones, Ltd. got its name from the astrological sign of each band member. Since Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, & Capricorn, Ltd. would have been redundant, they tacked on Jones' name at the end.

In regards to the Monkees' music, one thing I have come to appreciate about it is its stylistic diversity. Although they share the same birthday, the musical interests of Mike and Davy couldn't have been more different. Monkee tunes sung by Nesmith were usually in the country-rock vein (before the term was even coined), while the ones fronted by Davy were more pop oriented (with an occasional vaudevillian/show tune feel to them).

Below are clips of two of my favorite Monkee tunes with lead vocals by either Mike or Davy. If you are a Monkee fan, feel free to share some of your favorite Monkee songs sung by Mike or Davy.

Final Results of the Recent Holiday Shopping Poll

In the recent poll in which I asked readers what their method of shopping was for the holidays, nearly half said that they prefer the luxury of picking out presents online. The margin between online vs. brick and mortar was narrower than I thought it would be. When I asked this question two years ago, the gap was significantly wider (55% said online vs. 36% brick and mortar). I wonder if the increase of identity theft due to information online has caused more people to shop the old fashioned way. Unfortunately, the sad reality is that identity theft also happens at brick and mortar stores too. Below is just one of the horror stories that's been reported recently:

http://www.mycardblog.com/2009/02/best-buy-employees-steal-your-credit-card-information/

Here are the final poll results:

Online: 48%
Brick and Mortar: 44%
Since I don't celebrate the holidays, I don't shop - 7%
I let someone else do it for me- 0%

Thanks to all who participated.

My Review of The Goonies: 'R' They Good Enough For Me?

A few weeks ago, I conducted a poll asking readers to select an 80s movie for me to watch that I hadn't yet seen. The 1985 film The Goonies won and as a result, I watched it yesterday afternoon. Here is my review:

It can sometimes be problematic when watching kid-oriented movies as an adult, especially if you are seeing it for the first time. Thankfully, I didn't have that problem with watching The Goonies. True, the movie is geared towards kids... but kids at heart such as me can also get swept up in the adventure of this band of kids who go treasure hunting in an effort to save their neighborhood from being torn down. Here are some other observations I made about The Goonies:

* Near the beginning of the movie when Chunk came to tell Mikey, Brand, and Mouth about the most amazing car chase he's ever seen, it reminded me of another chubby movie kid (Vern) who had trouble convincing his friends about the dead body in the 1986 film Stand By Me. Although Stand By Me was based on a 1982 Stephen King novella The Body, I don't think the writer for The Goonies is guilty of thievery. I think the similarity was just a coincidence, but something that jumped out at me.

* I liked how the main characters all had traits which made them unique (Mikey's malapropisms, Data and his wacky inventions, Mouth's ability to speak Spanish fluently, etc.). Mikey's relationship with his older brother Brand was also believable. One of my favorite scenes is when Brand comforts Mikey on their porch after the evil Mr. Perkins delivers the demolition papers for their father to sign.

* Steve Antin (below) deserves to be in the 80s Movie Hall of Fame right up there with William Zabka because he was also really good at portraying assholes. In addition to his role as preppy jock Troy Perkins in The Goonies, Steve also played detestable characters in The Last American Virgin and The Accused.

To answer to the question I posed in the title of this post... yes, The Goonies 'R' good enough for me!

Actress Brittany Murphy Dead At 32

This story literally made me jump in my chair from shock. Actress Brittany Murphy was pronounced dead this morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after going into full cardiac arrest. Perhaps best known as Tai Frasier in the 1995 movie Clueless, Murphy also appeared in such films as Don't Say A Word, Girl Interrupted, Uptown Girls, and 8 Mile. She is survived by her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack (whom she wed in May, 2007).

TCM Underground: Get Down and Boogie and Thank God It's Friday

While scanning the digital cable guide to see what Turner Classic Movies was airing Friday night (12-18/12-19), I found they have a super 70s double feature scheduled for their cult movie showcase TCM Underground. At 2 am EST, they are showing a movie I had never heard of until today... 1975's Get Down and Boogie. Originally titled Darktown Strutters and described as a blaxploitation spoof in the digital cable guide, Get Down and Boogie stars Trina Parks (the first African-American female to appear in a Bond film) as a motorcycle gang member who is searching for her kidnapped mother. Also in the cast are such familiar faces as Roger E. Mosley (T.C. from Magnum P.I.), Stan Shaw (the stuttering boxer in Harlem Nights), and DeWayne Jessie (aka "Otis Day" from Animal House).

If the movie poster's heading doesn't grab you, get a load of what the book Blaxploitation Cinema: The Essential Reference Guide has to say about Get Down and Boogie:

"A series of outlandish, highly stylized comedy vignettes performed on sets that look like they were borrowed from Pee Wee's Playhouse"...

"The shenanigans include: extras walking around in bunny suits; a kung-fu session in which a house is completely demolished; and an entire song, Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get, performed by the soul group The Dramatics (from behind the bars of a jail cell)."

Get Down and Boogie may turn out to be horrible on 8 different levels, but I still gotta see it for myself. By the way, if you are a fan of blaxploitation movies and don't own the book Blaxploitation Cinema: The Essential Reference Guide, you need to take care of that (right after you finish reading this post).

Airing at 3:45 am EST is the 1978 disco comedy Thank God It's Friday. In addition to featuring the only big screen appearance by one of my childhood crushes (Donna Summer), TGIF also stars Jeff Goldblum, Debra Winger, Valerie Landsburg (Doris from the TV show Fame), Terri Nunn (the lead singer for Berlin), and once again... DeWayne Jessie!

The RRHOF's Class of 2010 Has Been Announced

On Tuesday, the five acts who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 was announced. I have mixed feelings about the artists who made the cut. For the record, I correctly predicted 2 out of the 5 acts who would get inducted in 2010. You can read my predictions at the link below:

Final Results of RRHOF Poll

If I was a baseball player, my .400 average would be good enough to win a batting title. Since I'm not, my percentage kinda sucks.

Below are the 5 acts who will be inducted in 2010:

ABBA
Jimmy Cliff
Genesis
The Hollies
The Stooges

and here are the 7 nominees who didn't make the cut:

The Chantels
KISS
LL Cool J
Darlene Love
Laura Nyro
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Donna Summer

Even though I would have passed over ABBA for the RRHOF's upcoming class, a smile came across my face when I read they were getting inducted because I am a fan. I haven't read any message boards yet, but I know people are pissed about the RRHOF voters saying I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do to ABBA while giving Gene, Paul, Ace, and Peter the KISS-off. Although ABBA once turned down a billion dollar offer to get back together, I hope they will make an exception to their "no reunion" rule and at least perform a medley of their hits at the induction ceremony.

The Hollies' induction was the biggest surprise to me. Outside of a handful of their songs (such as Bus Stop, Look Through Any Window, and Carrie-Anne), they've never really done much for me. They're alright, but kinda vanilla.

As for Jimmy Cliff, Genesis, and the Stooges, I have no feelings (positive or negative) about them getting inducted. I am looking forward to seeing all five members of Genesis perform together. It will be interesting to see how they reconcile their early prog-rock sound (when Peter Gabriel was at the helm) with the mainstream pop they made during the Phil Collins era. I am also banking on Iggy Pop doing some
crazy shit during the Stooges' performance at the induction ceremony.

I was disappointed that KISS, Darlene Love, and Donna Summer won't be a part of the 2010 class. I have a feeling they (along with Laura Nyro) will fall through the cracks and never get enshrined. As for LL Cool J and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, I think they are locks to get inducted somewhere down the line.

What are your thoughts on who will be inducted and who got passed by?

The Thank You For Blogging Award

A couple of weeks ago, I received the Thank You For Blogging Award from Penny (whose blog is titled The Winter of Our Discontent). My apologies for being late as hell in putting this up. It's quite an honor and I thank Penny for the kudos. Speaking of Kudos, one of their chocolate covered granola bars would hit the spot right now.

The rules are to pass along the award to a few other deserving bloggers. However, I'm going to break that rule and instead pass along this suggestion: please check out all of the blogs in my sidebar because they are all worth a look.

The WIRE: Week In REview, #2

Andy Keaton: A Fugitive No More

On December 11, Brian Bonsall, best known for his role as Andy Keaton on the sitcom Family Ties was charged in Colorado with second-degree assault after police say he repeatedly hit a friend in the head with a broken wooden stool in a December 5th bar brawl. The 28 yr old Bonsall had apparently been on the lam for over a year due to previous legal troubles when he was apprehended for the bar stool beatdown. Family Ties cast members are 2 for 2 in regards to being mentioned in The WIRE (last week, Meredith Baxter made it due to her recent coming out). Will Steven, Alex, Mallory, Jennifer, or Skippy step up and make it 3 for 3? Stay tuned.

Actor Gene Barry Dies At the Age of 90

On December 9, actor Gene Barry passed away. In addition to his lead role in the 1953 version of The War of the Worlds, Gene starred in the TV series Bat Masterson (1958-1961), Burke's Law/Amos Burke-Secret Agent (1963-1966, and 1994-1995), and The Name of the Game (1968-1971). If you were to look up the words "dapper" and "debonair" in the pop culture dictionary, you'd likely see a picture of Gene Barry.

"Catwoman" Foils A Not So Purrfect Crime

Robert Ouriel, an acquaintance of Julie Newmar's, was recently brought to justice after allegedly stealing $25,000 worth of jewelry from the actress best known for her recurring role as "Catwoman" on the 60s camp classic Batman. According to the D.A.'s office, Newmar noticed that several items were missing from her California home. She later discovered three of the items for sale on eBay. Prosecutors claim Ouriel shipped the stolen items to an Illinois pawnbroker, who later posted them on eBay. If convicted, Ouriel faces up to a 3-spot in the slammer. Take that Michelle and Halle!

Flint's Mark Ingram wins The Heisman Trophy

By the slimmest margin in voting history, Alabama running back Mark Ingram was awarded the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, December 13th. Given Alabama's rich college football history, I was surprised to learn a few weeks ago that none of their players had ever won The Heisman... well that's all changed. The highlights of the Mark's sophomore season include over 1,500 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns. With my hometown often making national news in a negative fashion, it's gratifying to see Flint get some positivity.

The Governor and T.J.: We Got the Beat

During Friday's episode of The Tonight Show, master thespian William Shatner continued his beat poetry-style rendering of the musings of Sarah Palin by reading a passage from the former Governor's bestseller Going Rogue. Shatner had the tables turned when Palin made a surprise appearance and read excerpts from his autobio Until Now. Given that Palin isn't a fan of "good ole David Letterman", it probably didn't take too much prodding to get her to appear on his rival's chat fest. Still, it was fun to see.

TCM Star of the Month For December: Humphrey Bogart

Every Wednesday for the month of December, TCM is devoting the entire day to films/specials featuring my favorite actor hands down... Humphrey Bogart. For those who aren't that familiar with the films of Bogart, this tribute serves as an excellent introduction. In addition to including most of the classics for which Bogie is best known (The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, The Big Sleep, etc.), the 64-film retrospective also features many of his lesser known films that are also worth checking out. Below are synopses on a handful of these films, with the year in parentheses, followed by the date and time it will air. All times are EST.

Crime School (1938)- In one of his rare pre-stardom roles where he plays a good guy, Bogie stars as a Deputy Commissioner of Correction who uncovers the deplorable conditions at a boys reform school. Co-starring with Bogart are The Dead End Kids. 12/9 at 8:45 am

King of the Underworld (1939)- A lady doctor (Kay Francis) gets mixed up with a gang headed by a Napoleon-quoting killer (Bogart). 12/9 at 5:45 pm

They Drive By Night (1940)- Bogie co-stars with George Raft as brothers struggling to make it in the trucking business. Lending excellent support are Alan Hale as the fun-loving owner of a trucking business and Ida Lupino as his conniving wife. 12/9 at 11:30 pm

The Wagons Roll At Night (1941)- A circus manager (Bogart) turns a farm boy (a young Eddie Albert) into a star lion tamer. 12/16 at 1 pm

Across the Pacific (1942)- A U.S. agent tries to thwart plans to blow up the Panama Canal. This film reunites Bogie with two of his co-stars (Mary Astor and Sydney Greenstreet) from The Maltese Falcon. 12/16 at 2:30 pm

All Through the Night (1942)- In this action comedy, a gang of racketeers turn patriotic to crack a Nazi spy ring. This film also features 3 actors who later gained sitcom fame: William Demarest (My Three Sons), Phil Silvers (Sgt. Bilko), and Jackie Gleason (The Honeymooners). 12/16 at 4:15 pm

Knock On Any Door (1949)- Bogie stars as a defense attorney representing a juvenile delinquent on trial for murder. His client is played by John Derek, who later moved behind the camera and married a trio of sex symbols (Ursula Andress, Linda Evans, and Bo Derek). 12/23 at 6 pm

Dark Passage (1947)- A man (Bogart) falsely accused of his wife's murder escapes prison to search for the real killer. This film (which also features Lauren Bacall and Agnes Moorehead) is unique due to its subjective camera work (for the first half of the movie, the action is seen from the point of view of Bogart's character). 12/23 at 12 midnight

The Harder They Fall (1956)- In his last film, Bogart plays a cynical former newspaper columnist hired by a fight promoter (Rod Steiger) to become a press agent for an inexperienced heavyweight boxer. This tough, realistic exposé of the boxing world gets added credibility from its casting of former heavyweight champions Jersey Joe Walcott and Max Baer. 12/30 at 4:30 pm

Deadline U.S.A. (1952)- A crusading newspaper editor fights to expose a gangster and stop his paper from being sold. Look for Jim Backus (Thurston Howell III of Gilligan's Island) in a supporting role as one of the reporters for the paper. 12/30 at 8 pm

The Left Hand of God (1955)- A priest employs unorthodox, but effective methods to aid a Chinese mission. Also in the cast are Gene Tierney, E.G. Marshall, Agnes Moorehead, and Lee J. Cobb (as a Chinese warlord!) 12/30 at 9:45 pm

For an article on Bogart and a complete list of his films TCM will be showing this month, please click here.

The WIRE: Week In REview, #1

Because the world of pop culture won't slow down to accommodate my hectic schedule, I haven't been able to blog about many of the stories that have unfolded recently. As a result, I decided that doing weekly summaries would give me a chance to touch on stories from the previous week that I didn't get around to covering. Here are a few of them:

CTFD: The Sun-Maid Girl Controversy

Welcome to "Not So Extreme Makeover: Advertising Mascot Edition". Over the years, the Sun-Maid Girl has undergone occasional updates to keep up with the changing times. From 1970-2006, she looked like this:

But the digital makeover she received (see below) has recently generated controversy. I say "recently" because the makeover took place in 2006! Some feel the new Sun-Maid Girl is a bit too "enhanced".

Come on, what's the big deal? It's not like those responsible for the makeover put the Sun-Maid Girl in a thong and have her hawking raisins as she works the stripper pole. Now if they did, Chester Cheetah would be down; he'd make it rain like it was Seattle, WA!

Although one blogger commented that the makeover looks "as if Julia Roberts decided to don a red bonnet and start picking grapes," I think the new Sun-Maid Girl looks more like Bianca Kajlich from the sitcom Rules of Engagement.

For more details, click the link below:

Sun-Maid Girl Controversy

Don't just do something, stand there!

It's bad enough to get your ass whupped on your home court, but at least put forth some effort. In Saturday's home game against the Toronto Raptors, the Chicago Bulls got spanked 110-78. Not only that, but during the game, Raptors guard Jarrett Jack had the ball at the top of the key when he stopped... to tie his shoe! All the while, the Bulls stood around and did nothing! Sportsmanship is one thing, but if a player is going to hold the ball and stop to tie his shoe, I'm going for the steal! Personally, this Bulls' lull couldn't happen to a better franchise. As a longtime Detroit Pistons fan, I can hardly stand the Bulls!

SNL: Showing No Levelheadedness?

On the December 5th episode of Saturday Night Live, they did a skit that spoofed Tiger Woods' infidelities. The skit made light of domestic abuse by having Tiger (played by Kenan Thompson) suffer a variety of injuries at the hands of his wife Elin (played by guest host Blake Lively). I'll admit that I did find this skit funny. However, the timing of it was suspect... the musical guest on SNL that night was R&B singer Rihanna, who was the victim of a highly-publicized domestic abuse incident involving then-boyfriend Chris Brown. Tune in next week as SNL does a gut-busting sketch on incest in an episode hosted by MacKenzie Phillips!

Note to the SNL producers: A little more diversity in the cast would be a good thing. I'm tired of seeing Kenan Thompson nearly every time a skit calls for a black celebrity (male or female)!

Bridget Loves Bridget

During a December 2nd interview with Matt Lauer on Today, actress Meredith Baxter publicly announced that she is a lesbian. Speculation about Baxter's sexuality came about after she was spotted on a lesbian cruise with a female friend. Some are debating whether or not Baxter is a lesbian or bisexual, but I trust she knows who she is. I think this is a cool story because so many people go through life not knowing or being comfortable enough to admit who they are. By the way, click here if you are curious about the "Bridget Loves Bridget" reference.

Final Results of the Recent Twilight Poll

With just over 1/3 of the votes, it appears there are several ladies who don't give a damn about the "Twilight" saga. Still, that doesn't change the fact that "Twilight" is probably the biggest female oriented pop culture phenomenon since Titanic. Yes, I know that a lot of guys saw Titanic, but how many of them were dragged to the theater by their wives/girlfriends? If you add up the "Twi-hard" and the non-"Twi-hard" (but still a fan) votes, it would slightly edge out those females who have no interest in whether or not Bella chooses Edward or Jacob.

I was a bit surprised that 10% voted "What the hell is Twilight?" I know at least one of those who voted that way knows what Twilight is, but chose that option because it was the closest to how they feel.

Something I learned from a co-worker is that there is a large contingent of Twilight "lolfans" who follow the saga simply to make fun of it. If you want to join in on the mockery, here is the link to a forum I found.

Here are the final poll results to the question where I asked what are your thoughts on the "Twilight" saga?:

I'm a female and I still don't give a damn about it!- 36%
I'm A "Twi-hard"! and The books and movies- 19% each
I'm a dude, so I couldn't care less- 13%
What the hell is "Twilight?!- 10%

Oprah, You Are Such A Scream

The city of Chicago, network affiliates, and women over the age of 30 collectively went into early mourning when Oprah announced last month that she was quitting her show in 2011. Over the years, one of Oprah's trademarks has been the unique style in which she introduces celebrities who appear on her show. Below is a compilation of some of the best. Normally, her introductions get on my damn nerves. However, there is something about hearing them strung together that made me literally lol several times. Two of my favorites from the montage are Penelope Cruz and Mariah Carey.

Did any of these make you lol, want to puncture your ear drums or both?

Thanks to Dane for passing this along to me.
