Thursday Thirteen #19: TV Shows That "Jumped the Shark"

Thirteen TV Shows That I Think "Jumped the Shark"

Back in the mid 1980s, a term was coined that has become one of the most used in the pop culture lexicon: Jump the Shark. It refers to a defining moment when you know that your favorite television program has reached its peak. That instant that you know from now on...it's all downhill. The term was derived from an infamous 1977 episode of "Happy Days" when the Fonz (on water skis) literally jumps over a shark. There is even a website (Jump the Shark) that serves as a forum where people can comment on when a show did or didn't go downhill. Below are 13 instances when I knew that a favorite program of mine strapped on the skis and therefore would never be the same.

All In the Family- When Mike and Gloria moved into the house next door (which had been vacated by The Jeffersons) during the 1974-75 season. I realize that the change was plausible (given that Mike had graduated from college and got a job as a professor). But the show was at its best when the 4 main characters were all living under the same roof.

The Andy Griffith Show- The exit of deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts) after season 5. One of the funniest characters in TV history, Barney made the show come alive. The producers clumsily tried to make up for his absence by introducing the character of deputy Warren Ferguson in season 6. They realized their mistake and dropped him before the season ended. Although Barney did return for 5 guest appearances over the last 3 seasons, the series as a whole never recovered.

Chico and the Man- The death of Freddie Prinze (who played Chico). The producers tried to fill the void by bringing in a new "Chico" (in the form of 12 year old Raul), but they would have been better off if they had just ended the series.

Dallas- The "death" of Bobby Ewing (played by Patrick Duffy). With the departure of Duffy, "Dallas" lost one of its best elements (the conflict between brothers J.R. and Bobby). Larry Hagman saw the writing on the wall and pleaded with Duffy to rejoin the show. Although Duffy returning was a must in my opinion, I wish there could have been some other way to accomplish this instead of the "dream season" that the writers devised.

The Dukes of Hazzard- Actors Tom Wopat (Luke Duke) and John Schneider (Bo Duke) temporarily leave the series from 1982-83. Because of a dispute over their salaries and merchandising royalties, the pair understandably walked away from the show. This forced the producers to bring in two other Duke cousins (Coy and Vance). When the ratings took a nosedive, the producers quickly patched up their differences with Wopat and Schneider. Even with their return, the show never recovered.

The Facts of Life- The departure of Mrs. Garrett. The loss of Mrs. G (coupled with the fact of life that Blair, Jo, Natalie, and Tootie were outgrowing their roles) was the beginning of the end.

Get Smart- Would you believe that having Max and 99 become the parents of twins during the 5th and final season of the show was the greatest plot development in TV history? Would you believe the 2nd greatest? How about a lousy idea that effectively killed one of the most original sitcoms on TV?

Good Times- When they killed off James Evans in 1976, the series not only lost a strong black male who was the head of the family, but a fine actor as well (John Amos). "Good Times" continued its decline in 1977 when Esther Rolle (who played the mother Florida Evans) left the series for a season. Although Rolle did return to "Good Times" in the fall of 1978, it was a case of too little too late and the show was cancelled at the end of the season.

Happy Days- The increasing prominence of the Fonzie character. Don't get me wrong, the Fonz is one of the all-time great TV characters. But I think he was most effective in the early years when he was just a supporting character. As the series went on, he not only became the focus, but was almost superhuman. I could handle Fonzie banging on the jukebox to get it to play or stop. But some of the feats they had him performing (defeating a world class fencer, riding a killer bull, and getting the wildlife to be quiet by yelling "Cool It!" just to name a few) were downright silly.

Laverne and Shirley- The relocation of the setting from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Burbank, California at the beginning of the 1980-81 season. One of the charms of "Laverne and Shirley" is that its Milwaukee setting gave it a blue-collar feel, which was lost when the show moved out West. To have the characters of Laverne and Shirley move would have been bad enough, but having the entire cast relocate made absolutely no sense.

Melrose Place- "Special Guest Star" Heather Locklear joins the cast as Amanda Woodward at the end of the 1st season. I know that I am in the minority, but I prefer the pre-Amanda era of "Melrose Place" when it was a similar in tone to "Party of Five". After Heather joined the show, "Melrose Place" morphed into "Dynasty" on acid (the unexplained personality changes of characters such as Michael and Kimberly being one of its main offenses). Also, anyone who stays with a show for 6 years is no longer a "Special Guest Star" in my book.

Moonlighting- For the 1st few seasons, "Moonlighting" was one of the best shows on TV. However, when David (Bruce Willis) and Maddie (Cybill Shepherd) hit the sheets, the show hit the skids.

Scooby Doo- The addition of Scrappy Doo in 1979. Luckily, his addition to "Scooby Doo" came shortly before I reached the age when I thought I was too old to watch cartoons. Therefore, his presence didn't scar me too badly. "Puppy Power" my ass!

If a TV show didn't make my list, it's due to one of the following:

a. There are only 13 slots.
b. I'm not very familiar with the show and therefore have no opinion on whether or not it jumped the shark
c. I don't think the show did jump the shark

With that being said, did a series that you watch ever "jump the shark"? If so, at what moment do you think it happened?

Scrappy Doo is an aberation that should forever be excised from history and every recording of the show in existence.

Great TT :-)

Those were great! I remembered all of them when they went "down-hill!"

Oh, and I actually had "The Monkees" on my list, but replaced it with MASH! :)

I hate hate hate Scrappy Doo! I don't remember Laverne and Shirley relocating, but then again I was only 6 at the time.

I was so disgusted when Bobby Ewing came back in the shower that I gave up watching Dallas. That was just insulting our intelligence too much.

aren't you too young to remember most of these? ;)

as a kid, my favorite of the shows on your list was the facts of life. i wish they still played re-runs on TV!

I totally agree with you on all of this. And with Mark about Scrappy Doo. Ugh. I hate that dog.

Other shows that jumped... Beauty and the Beast, once Catherine (Linda Hamilton) died.

Sesame Street, when Elmo entered the scene.

Terrific TT. I especially love the Andy Griffith comment. If I see the episode is in color, I skip it* because I know that means NO BARNEY.

*Or should I say I "Nip it, nip it in the bud!"

I totally agree...especially Happy Days. Funny, jumped the shark is a term my BF uses all the time:) Happy TT.

Another excellent list, Malcolm! I totally agree with you in Melrose Place. I much preferred it the first season and didn't watch it much after Amanda joined the case.

I've found that the birth of a child (or addition of some other child) on a sitcom often signals the jumping of the shark. Would you agree? Roseanne, Brady Bunch, Family Ties, etc.

Lori said...

Hey Malcolm,
You know what also ruined "Good Times" for me? When they added Keith (Thelma's husband) with his non-acting self. Wonder whatever happened to him? And why all the "Scrappy Do" hate (LOL)?

Oh how I loved and love Laverne & Shirley. And FYI, I voted for Britney in your poll! :)

I agree with you about all of those shows...especially All In The Family! They have to live in the same house--it's the only way the show works!

Right now I think the show that's way past the shark is ER. I don't know if you watch that, but once Carter left the show, it's been pretty much over in my opinion.

Impworks: If you can get the Scooby Doo master tapes that contain Scrappy, I'll supply the scissors.

Chelle: I can understand you replacing "The Monkees" with "MASH" on your theme song TT. Both are great and memorable themes.

Mistress of the D: If you happen to catch one of the California episodes of "L&S", run for cover.

Nicholas: The Dallas "dream season" was a slap in the face. The only good thing I can say about it is that it erased that wretched Bobby-less season.

Kendra: Flattery will get you everywhere :)

All through middle/high school, "The Facts of Life" was one of my favorite shows (Wednesday nights at 9 was the place to be). Maybe TV Land or Nick at Nite will bring it back again.

Susan: Good call on "Beauty and the Beast". Losing Linda Hamilton was a death blow. The last time I saw that show was when it was rerun on the USA Network in the early 90s. Although it only ran for 3 seasons, some channel/network should take a chance and rerun it.

The Gal Herself: I almost put in that reference to the switch to color being a tip-off that you can pretty much skip those eps of "The Andy Griffith Show". It's similar to "Good Times". If you are watching the opening credits and notice that Ja'net Du Bois (Wilona) gets top billing, it's a safe bet that you can change the channel and not miss too much.

Lori: I could have done a TT specifically devoted to the many ways that "Happy Days" jumped the shark. Man did some of those latter day episodes stink!

Bookmama: The birth of a baby or the addition of kid is a big time JTS moment to me. Although these plot devices don't always kill a show, I can't think of one time where they were improvements.

Lori: Yeah, I don't think the producers hired Ben Powers (Keith) for his thespian skills. Probably his worst performance is the episode where he was drunk and slapped Thelma. I don't know what happened to Keith. Maybe he is in a building somewhere and is attempting to act his way out. If that's the case, he will never make it.

Pardon me, but I have to practice my dart throwing. My target: a photo of Scrappy-Doo.

Works for Mom: My favorite ep. of "Laverne and Shirley" is the one where they signed up to be guinea pigs in order to earn money for cocktail dresses so that they could go to a fancy party. I just checked the poll results and found that Britney, Lindsay, and Bobby are tied for the lead.

The Rock Chick: I started watching ER during the 2nd or 3rd season. It slipped a bit when George Clooney left, but I stuck around. I haven't watched it for a few years, but I think I did toss it aside around the time that Carter left.

Karen said...

Great TT! I'd add X-Files when Mulder left (or was abducted or whatever--) then kind of came back, then disappeared, the reappeared....etc.etc.etc. The show was more about the relationship between Scully and Mulder than anything else and when he left, Jaws was Jumped!!
Happy TT!

DAMN! DAMN! DAMN! I was so pissed off when John Amos left "Good Times". That show went to hell in a handbasket after that. There are so many shows to choose from that have jumped the shark that in fact I can only off hand recall not one that did not, "The Golden Girls". "Designing Women" jumped the shark when Suzanne Sugarbaker left, although there were some funny moments with Jan Hooks and Julia Duffy.

In my opinion, the kiss of death for a prime time show bar none is when they an actor leaves for whatever reason and the producers simply insert a new actor("Bewitched", "Roseanne", "Family Matters"); However replacing Meg Foster for Sharon Gless did not seem to hurt "Cagney & Lacey" ratings.

I agree wholeheartedly with all thirteen of your selections. "Laverne and Shirley" should have kept their asses in Milwaukee. Also when the main character dies the show should end.

Open Grove Claudia said...

Great list, of course. I've never heard the term before - so how fun! Uh - Steve Austin and Jamie Sommers hooking up (Bionic man), death of Tim Quinn (MI-5 or Spooks), oh boy this list could go on and on....

Happy TT Malcolm! :)

I really didn't watch most of those shows, but I think the whole concept of jumping the shark is interesting.

SJ Reidhead said...

How much fun! I remained an Andy Griffin fan, but I will admit, I've just begun to truly appreciate that show.

I don't think Magnum, P. I. ever went downhill - until that shameless Las Vegas the other night (first I ever saw) where there was a Rick & TC reunion!

Man those take me back! Never watched Dallas.

Yuriko said...

I can't agree more with Laverne and Shirley... :) And I think with Happy Days it all started to decline when Richie left...

Scooby Doo was so much better without Scrappy...and even Scooby Dum... that was dumb!

damozel said...

"Get Smart" illustrates how giving in to the craving of the audience to see a romance fulfilled is death to a show.

I think some of those shows had run their course anyway. The Brits are smarter; they make most of theirs in series of 6. After awhile even the best shows sort of outlive their novelty.

Xakara said...

The fact that Moonlighting tanked after David and Maddie got together is so sad, because it caused the aversion to romance between main characters from then on.

If it's not a soap opera, everyone wants sexual tension without consummation. But as complicated and dynamic as relationships can be, there's no reason that a show has to end at the movement of climax.

Oh ya those shows Jumped the Shark for sure. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, I totally forgot about the Puppy Power (she says shivering uncontrollably) I'm glad there is someone else out there who like Melrose Place in the Pre Amanda years.

Happy TT

I agree with the Moonlighting fiasco.. I regret buying the rest of the seasons on dvd.

Wakela said...

I still have nightmares about Scrappy Doo! Even though I am 36, I don't feel that I outgrew cartoons. So I still watch them and Scooby is one of my favorites. I have to admit that I change the channel if its one with Scrappy in it.

I think Rhoda Jumped the Shark when she and David Groh got married.

Same with Mork and Mindy.

Thanks for visiting My T13

Thanks for the early morning stroll down memory lane. Fortunately, I'd left cartoons behind long before Scrappy Doo came into the picture. Judging from the reactions of some of your commenters... I would have been scarred for life.

Great list!!

Ha ha - I have watched most of these shows! LOVE the photo of The Fonz. And thanks for the explanation of the phrase "jump the shark". It's one of those phrases that people use a lot, but don't always know quite what it means or where it came from.

Smiles,
Holly

Very interesting post. I have two additions to your list, The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie. When Olivia and John-Boy were no longer a regular part of the show... although I think a few of the later episodes are better than some when the children were really young... I think the real feeling behind The Waltons changed. Same with Little House on the Prairie when Michael Landon left. Thanks for visiting my Thursday Thirteen!

Scrappy Doo, worst character EVER

It was so sad about Moonlighting! I loved that show.

Lara Angelina: I heard that about "The X-Files" from critics and fans. Those last couple of seasons definitely damaged the show's reputation.

Pjazzy: It was shame what the powers that be did to "Good Times". I sometimes imagine what it would have been like if John Amos stayed with the show. If he did, I'll bet you that Keith wouldn't have slapped Thelma that one time.

I totally agree that "The Golden Girls" never JTS. Next year I might do a TT on shows that I think didn't JTS. It'll be a bit of a struggle coming up with 13, but I'll try.

Open Grove: You are right about this list going on and on. It could have easily been a Thursday Thirty.

Cordia: Since you didn't see these shows hit the skids, consider yourself lucky.

SJ Reidhead: I read about the mini-Magnum reunion on "Las Vegas". Hopefully I can catch it when NBC repeats it.

Yuriko: I have to hand it to you for sticking with "Happy Days" until Ron Howard left. You have a stronger stomach than I do.

Damozel: I was watching the Inside TV Land special about "Get Smart" and Buck Henry said that had he stayed with the show, he would have fought tooth and nail against a Max and 99 wedding.

I agree with your comment about British shows. Many of the U.S. cable shows have adopted the policy of doing shorter seasons (10-15 episodes) instead of the standard 22-25 that the network series produce. I think that this helps the cable shows sustain their quality.

Xakara: In my opinion, one reason that the pairing of Dave and Maddie on "Moonlighting" didn't work is because they didn't have an ensemble cast to fall back on. I think that Sam/Diane on "Cheers" did work because the show had a lot of other characters and therefore other storylines on which to focus.

Janet: That is the first time I ever heard John Amos referred to as yummy, lol. Did you find his angry outbursts on "Good Times" sexy? :-)

Scooper: If we rubbed Preparation H on Scrappy Doo, do you think he would disappear?

Joyismygoal: Thanks for the kind words. It's a labor of love.

Amy: It's nice to come into contact with another fan of the pre-Amanda years of "MP".

Sorry that my mention of Scrappy Doo gave you the shivers. :-)

Angela/Sci-Fi Chick: Maybe you can find a poor sucker er, devoted fan who will buy those last couple of seasons of "Moonlighting" from you.

Wakela: My Scrappy Doo nightmares stopped around 1997. However, it took me years of psychoanalysis to accomplish this.

Dane: The marriage of Mork and Mindy was beyond pointless. Why can't the networks just pull the plug before things sink to this level?

Harlekwin: see my reply above to Wakela.

Holly: Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad that I was able to solve the mystery of the definition of the term "Jump the Shark" for you. If I wasn't a pop culture freak, I would probably be asking, "what the hell does Jump the Shark mean?"

My dad is Andy Griffith obsessed. I loved the character of Barney (I think Don Knotts is absolutely amazing), and the new deputy (who's name I can't recall, but I can see his face clear as day)just couldn't live up. I did love the episode when Barney came back to visit and NuDeputy thought Barney was practically a God...

Malcolm, don't tell anyone I said this but sometimes I skip over certain blogs I read. I never miss a word of any of yours. This was a great list and I agree on ALL of these. Especially Happy Days, Chico and the Man, and MOONLIGHTING. They really ruined Moonlighting with that stupid move and it just goes to show - the thrill is often in the chase.

I remember thinking that same thing about Melrose...special guest star???hasn't she been on the show for years? Also, I didn't know about L. and Shirley relocating...loved the show but I guess I was a little young to notice those kinds of details.

I had never heard the term "jumped the shark" but now I'm racking my brian b/c I know exactly what you mean now, and I know that there are plenty more! I'll have to come back when I have time to think!

I'm all about black sitcoms so here are some:

A Different World: After Dwayne and Whitley eloped and they moved into a house off-campus.

Whats Happening: Raj and Rerun leave home and live in that building with that cop and his annoying kid. yes I know the classic 'No Roger No Rerun No Rent' episode was after this, but still.

The Cosby Show: When Rudy's cuteness had been officially replaced by Olivia's, and it was clear that the twins were next in line.

Family Matters: When Urkel's voice had clearly changed.

Martin: Once Gina and Martin were no longer on the show at once (after Tisha Campbell made sexua harassment allegations).

Living Single: When Kyle moved to London and they brought on Idalis and that guy from Soul Food.

Malcolm said...

Shirley: Although I didn't watch "The Waltons" all that much, I did catch some of the early and later episodes. Olivia and the original John-Boy leaving did have a negative effect.

I also agree with you about "Little House on the Prairie". When Landon left the show, they renamed it "Little House: A New Beginning". The should have called it "Little House: The Beginning of the End".

Sparky Duck: In this age of internet message boards, I wonder if Scrappy Doo would have lasted long if he was created today.

Lisa: I hate to see an excellent show go down the tubes. Me and my girlfriend stuck with "Moonlighting" for about another year before we threw in the towel.

Samantha K: If Don Knotts was in a movie or TV show, that automatically made it worth watching in my book. The character that replaced Barney on "The Andy Griffith Show" was Warren Ferguson.

Titania: Thanks for the kudos... it is much appreciated!

Nap Warden: I thought that someone would have disagreed with me sooner regarding my thoughts on "Melrose Place". Even though I still think that Heather helped to undo the show, I still watched it for a few more years.

Barbara: You are too kind. By the way, I won't tell anyone.

I read the other day that the cable channel ION Television will begin airing reruns of "Chico and the Man" soon.

Thembi: Thanks for stopping by. When Dwayne and Whitley hooked up, the show was long past its expiration date in my opinion. I still liked "What's Happening!" when Raj and Rerun had the apartment. However, it wasn't as good as the first two seasons. Even when I was a kid, Little Earl's crush on Dee was a bit annoying. I haven't seen any of those eps in awhile so they are probably worse when viewed with adult eyes.

Bill Cosby should have known better than to think he could fool anyone with the old trick of bringing in a new cute kid when the original is getting long in the tooth.

Family Matters: This show made the same mistake as "Happy Days" by taking a supporting character (in this case Urkel) and spotlighting him at the expense of other cast members. Good call on Urkel's voice change. Those last few years Jaleel White's voice was probably as deep as mine. Similar situation: Screech on "Saved By the Bell". As he aged you could tell that he was straining to do that nerd voice.

Earlier this summer there were talks that there might be a big screen version of "Martin" starring all of the regulars (including Tisha). I haven't heard any news since then.

It was sad to see "Living Single" go out with a whimper the way it did. Another thing that pisses me off is that the "creators" of "Friends" stole the premise of "Living Single" and made boat loads of money. What makes it even worse is that many people consider "Living Single" a "Friends" clone!

Thembi Ford said...

Living Single is the most slept-on sitcom in black history (right next to "Where I Live" starring Doug E Doug, which was too good to even hold an audience). I was watching it on Oxygen the other day and laughed out loud multiple times during each episode, a feat only accomplished by "30 Rock" and "Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia" lately, and certainly not by a single black show.

The thing about Different World is that once Whitley and Dwayne finally got together, what were we watching it for? Nothing!

Thembi Ford said...

By the way, your blog has become an instant fave - we're both obsessed with obscure pop culture!

Lisa said...

I totally agree on all counts (of shows I watched! LOL) Especially Happy Days - man, they totally turned it over to Fonzie and the cheering and clapping whenever he spoke was enough to drive this girl insane.

Good list! I look forward to your next list of shows that JTS. (OH! I was an avid Moonlighting fan and couldn't agree more about your comments. What a bummer that was, huh?)

Thanks for visiting my Thursday 13. Have a good Sunday!
