The Retro Mix video of the week: My Secret (Didja Gitit Yet) by New Edition
From the summer of 1985, the video for My Secret (Didja Gitit Yet) shows the quintet having fun with neighborhood locals, one of which is played by Tyra Ferrell (Boyz In the Hood, White Men Can't Jump, Poetic Justice, etc.). They then head off to the Forum to watch the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Portland Trailblazers. Making cameo appearances are Laker legend Magic Johnson and then-coach Pat Riley (back when that slicked back 'do actually was kinda cool). The Laker Girls even show up briefly (sorry, no sign of Paula Abdul). New Edition member Ralph Tresvant even gets asked to suit up as a Laker for some last second heroics!
It's ironic that New Edition (a group from Boston) are shown supporting the Lakers instead of the Celtics. Especially since the Celtics/Lakers rivalry was extremely heated at the time. My guess is that it was deemed cooler for NE to be seen hanging with Magic than Larry Bird; or maybe Larry was asked to appear in the video, but turned them down.

I use to love New Edition! You have some gems on the playlist. I see you got in the tribute to Bo Diddley. I love "Don't Leave Me This Way", which is arguably my favorite disco song. I hate "Funkytown" though, it's right up there with "Fly Robin Fly", but that's just me. I never heard of that song by the Supremes. It must have been from their post, post Diana Ross days.
Oh yeah, Probably the reason why New Edition chose the Lakers over the Celtics is because Magic was probably a fan of their musis. I really can't see Bird getting down with New Edition. Can you?
Pjazzy: It seems like you have missed every show where I've played "Don't Leave Me This Way", lol.
I didn't realize you hated "Funkytown". Although I can see it being a song that one either loves or hates. "Bad Weather" was released in 1973 and was written, produced, and arranged by Stevie Wonder. I'll send you a copy of it (I think it has an Al Green groove to it).
In the video for "My Secret", Magic's only interaction w/ New Edition was when he high-fived Ralph Tresvant (something that Bird could've handled). I think that NE was a fan of Magic's and vice versa. However, I also feel that the choice of having Magic in the video had something to do with who NE and a majority of their fanbase (young Blacks) identified with more (the Lakers over the Celtics).
Staying Alive is such a fun pick-me-up song. If it doesn't make you dance, it will at least get your head bobbing.
Growing up I didn't realize that Faith has the "Bo Diddley" beat - but I certainly appreciate Bo Diddley's influence on "my boy".
Domino is a song we used to play in high school band. Goon one.

Holly: Staying Alive is a great show opener. It's the second time that I have used it in that capacity.
Until I did that T13 about the Bo Diddley Beat, it never occurred to me that "Faith" had "the beat".
"Domino" is one of my favorite Van Morrison tunes. When I was putting the playlist together, I had planned on playing "Wild Night" by Van. Since I had problems locating it on my mix CDs, I went with option 2.
