Chris Bosh Wants Your Vote

Toronto Raptors power forward Chris Bosh is the man behind one of the funniest things to hit the NBA in awhile. In late December, he starred in a campaign video urging fans to vote for him in the upcoming NBA All-Star game. I saw it for the first time the other day and thought it was very funny (I still do). The video is a spoof of those cheesy used car commercials and shows a side of Bosh that I and most other fans don't get a chance to see.

Like I said, the video is funny to me. However, I also originally thought that the video would affect the integrity of the All-Star voting process. I quickly had to check myself though. Integrity?! Integrity?! In the past, fans have voted in players such as Yao Ming and Shaquille O'Neal in years when their stats didn't warrant it. When you consider that, you realize that the voting process has about as much integrity as a certain U.S. Presidential election. Oops, did I say that out loud? Besides, Bosh has pretty good numbers for the season (20.3 pts, 9.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists), so it's not like he's a scrub off the bench stumping for votes.

As of Thursday, Bosh was the 3rd leading vote getter (411,313) for forwards in the Eastern Conference. The 2008 NBA All-Star Game will be played in New Orleans on February 17.

One way to enterpret the meaning of 'All-Star' is literally. In other words, one could argue that an All-Star game doesn't have to reflect the best players in the league, necessarily, but rather the biggest stars, the players the public wants most to see together.

If Ming and Shaq have been there in their off-years, one could argue that they're still two of the biggest stars of the game (literally and figuratively). Bosh is simply making a bid to become a star through a novel approach.

I almost feel like voting for him, because the video is hilarious. But ever since my Royals left Cincinnati thirty-five years ago, I've said, "To hell with the NBA." To me, pro basketball doesn't exist.

The Pistons played the Raptors last night so I got to see the commercial during the game. Before yesterday I had never heard of Chris Bosh. I haven't really paid much attention to the Raptors since the departure of Vince Carter. I did get to see the big screen version of the commercial, funny stuff! He probably won't make it to the game because of Garnett's eastward move, but I would vote for him simply because of the commercial. I could see him on "Saturday Night Live".

That was pretty funny. Love the used car salesman accent. We're Rockets fans " 'round these parts."

X. Dell: Just like most things, the All-Star game is often a popularity contest. As for Yao and Shaq being two of the biggest stars in the game, there is no argument. As long as they are in the league, this will be the case. Although Shaq is having a subpar year, he is 2nd in voting among Eastern Conference centers. Me personally, I'm all about seeing the best players in the game.

Pjazzy: Due to their location and because they are not an elite NBA team, many people forget about the Toronto Raptors and Chris Bosh. The video he did is definitely raising his profile. I don't know when his contract is up, but I wouldn't be surprised if Chris left Toronto for an NBA contender south of the Canadian border.

You mentioned Vince Carter. The fans in Toronto are still pissed at him for the way he left. Did you ever notice that Vince is a dead ringer for Tim Moore (who played The Kingfish on the TV version of "Amos and Andy")?

Holly: I didn't realize until last week that Chris Bosh is from Texas. I'm guessing that he probably "twanged it up" a little for the video though.

Do you think that this will be the year that Tracy McGrady gets the monkey off of his back and finally wins a playoff series? I have my doubts because he and Yao seem to be plagued with injuries and the Rockets are only going to go as far as those two can take them. I would like to see T Mac win a playoff series this season because it was sad to see him breakdown during the post game interview after they lost to Utah in the playoffs last year.

Malcolm,

I don't remember how Kingfish looked. I'll have to try to find an episode on youtube.

I really hope so! He's such a nice guy. He deserves to win! I haven't been paying much attention to basketball this year. But after tonight's BCS Championship game, we'll start watching it more. Geaux Tigers!!!!
