When the movie Stepmom came out, I went out and found their CD with "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." But, I have always loved that song for as long as I can remember.

My mom used to sing "Ain't No Mtn. High Enough" when I was a kid to assure me she would always be there when I needed her. Brings back a lot of memories so it definitely takes the winning vote for me.
I remember hearing rumors that Marvin's constant beatings eventually led to her death!
Anyho! I vote for 'Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing'...I remember playin' it so long and so hard that the grooves on the 45'disappeared.
Holly: Although those "sing-along" scenes can be tiresome, I did enjoy the one in "Stepmom". If it helps to introduce younger audiences to older music, I am all for it.
Samantha: Since it's still early in the polls, I'll be that "You're All I Need To Get By" will get more than it's share of votes. Because you are a "branching out" type of woman, you might enjoy some of the music-related Thursday Thirteens that I have planned.
Sarah: That's such a cool story. Since "Ain't No Mountain..." is tied to fond childhood memories of yours, I can see why you voted for it.
ColoredGirl: Although many people thought they were, Marvin and Tammi were never romantically involved. She did date Temptation David Ruffin, who allegedly gave her some serious beatdowns.
Aren't you glad that with technology today, we can play our favorite songs over and over without worrying about wearing them out.
You really can't go wrong with any of those songs. I'm having a hard time trying to choose, so much so, I just might have to opt out of the poll altogether (smile).
Lori: When in doubt, you can make eliminations until one song is left using the scientific method (aka My mother told me to pick the very best one and you are not IT).

But i ended up picking Your Precious Love... and i based it solely on lyrics and how i remember feeling when i would hear it on the radio.
tho i do LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Ain't No Mountain High Enough, this isn't my favorite version of the song.
This is a tough one. Too many good songs.
"Precious Love" hands down. And for the record, Marvin never dated or laid a hand on Tammi Terrell. They were partners in song only. The person who allegedly beat Ms. Terell was David Ruffin of Temptation fame. Tammi Terrell also dated James Brown (The Godfather of Soul) for a period of time.

X. Dell: This is a true testament to the high quality of Motown releases back in the day. In case you still need help making a choice, you may want to consider the advice I gave to Lori earlier.
Pjazzy: I love these polls because they allow me to learn about the tastes of others. I was afraid that "Your Precious Love" wouldn't get much love in this poll, but it's holding it's own somewhat nicely.
Coin tossing is much more scientific.
X. Dell: I employ the coin toss method when I am torn between using "eeny meeny miny moe" or the option I gave Lori.
I love your polls, Malcolm! Looks like I'm in the majority with my vote, so far. I actually do like "You're All I Need to Get By" too, though.
Well, I guess I'm gonna have to go with PJazzy's choice--"Your Precious Love." The cd I'm listening to this morning (The Best of Smooth Jazz, Vol.3) has a nice Al Jarreau and Randy Crawford cover of the song. So, I'm taking that as a sign (LOL).
Interesting aside (at least to me), the hubby's favorite Marvin Gaye tune is "Come Get To This." While listening to it the other day, he said "You ever noticed how Marvin wailed, moaned, begged and managed to say everything that needed to be said on that song without ever getting outright vulgar?"
Yeah, that Marvin was a special kind of fella. Don't see talent much like that these days.

@Lori...there is so much truth in your comment. I don't know when the light bulb went on in my head from the day I bought his Let's Get It On album until years later quietly listening to Come Get To This,did I begin to blush while silently saying 'duh' to myself. I wasn't a sheltered or clueless teenager, but
your correct his music was not in your face.
Cindy: Thank you! "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" jumped out to a lead and never looked back.
Lori: "Come Get To This" is a fave of mine too. Until a few years ago, I preferred Marvin's post-1970 work over his earlier recordings. However, I now enjoy them equally. I put him in a similar category as Curtis Mayfield. What I mean by that is I don't think many people truly appreciated his genius until after he died.
ColoredGirl: If you ever get the chance and if they are still available, you should check out some of the Motown bios that have been written such as "Dreamgirl" by Mary Wilson, "Divided Soul: the Life of Marvin Gaye" by David Ritz, and "Deliver Us From Temptation" by Tony Turner. They include some eye opening details about the folks who made "The Sound of Young America".
