Thursday Thirteen #30: Stars Dish About Other Stars

Thirteen Celebrity Quotes

When celebs dish on other celebs, what comes out of their mouths is often funnier than anything a screenwriter could come up with. Below are some quotes extracted from the hilarious 1994 book "Hollywood Babble On" by Boze Hadleigh.

1. Rock Hudson let his gay agent marry him off to his secretary because he didn't want people to get the right idea- Anthony Perkins

2. She's the original good time that was had by all- Bette Davis on starlet Marilyn Monroe

3. All my life I wanted to look like Liz Taylor. Now I find that Liz Taylor is beginning to look like me. - Divine, who weighed more than 300 pounds.

4. Michael Jackson cut off his nose to spite his race- Marvin Gaye

5. I was particularly stunned by the casting of [Tom] Cruise, who is no more my Vampire Lestat than Edward G. Robinson is Rhett Butler. - Anne Rice on the filming of her novel Interview With A Vampire

6. Bill (William Frawley) took a dislike to Viv when he overheard her say that she was too young to play his wife. Or, more precisely, that he was too old to play her husband. - Lucille Ball

7. Audrey Hepburn is the patron saint of anorexics.- Orson Welles

8. He looks like a dwarf that fell in a vat of pubic hair.- Boy George on Prince

9. Sly Stallone is five-seven, I believe. Shorter than you'd think -not just short on talent. Anyway, he only hires actors his height or shorter, unless they're to play some kind of freakish villain. So I'll never work with Stallone unless I let him shoot me, and I'll never let myself get that desperate!- Burt Lancaster

10. Peter O'Toole looks like he's walking around just to save funeral expenses.- John Huston

11. A toupee'-wearing hack has-been. - Bobcat Goldthwaite on Charlton Heston

12. Liberace and Truman Capote- I can never get those two straight. - Milton Berle

13. Diana Ross doesn't want to do this movie because she wants to be white. - Ryan O'Neal about The Bodyguard, an interracial love story finally filmed in 1992 with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner.

I do hope those are all actual quotes! If they aren't, they should be!

These are great! But did Marvin Gaye really say that? It seems like he died before MJ cut off his nose...?

Lori said...

Really, Boy George should never open his mouth to say anything bad about anyone's looks (LOL). Milton Berle's quote was sort of like a double joke, very clever. Good stuff Malcolm.

Gosh. Wow. They are so awful to each other. I guess the celebrities deserve Perez Hilton (who is really awful)!! I'm a little amazed at this. Especially Betty Davis against Monroe - like she's someone to talk.

(shaking my head)

Happy TT Malcolm! :)

I have to wonder how many people would be refused jobs if they made these statements today?

It's a shame because these are really rich, telling statements. Why are we sanitizing our society so much? It's horrid.

I had the opportunity to read the draft of an autobiography of one of the silver screen greats - what incredible juicy gossip about Gable and Lombard!

Cool quotes. I knew about 6, 7, and 13. Number 2 is hilarious. Sometimes I think Bette Davis missed her calling because she sure could say some funny things.

Bette Davis and John Huston were brutal!

I quite like Peter O'Toole. Just thinking of him in The Lion in Winter.... What a presence.

Thanks for this list.

They're all so funny, but I think my favorite one has to be the Marvin Gaye quote.

Funny as heck. Love the Marilyn Monroe one.

Those are really funny! I enjoyed this list.

Wow, Ryan's quote is brutable. Whitney Houston was perfect for the movie.

I love Audrey Hepburn. I was once told I look like a mix btwn Audrey Hepburn and Joan of Arc (if we knew what she looked like).

Oh how I wish that comment was true, but the guy was just trying to get in my pants.:-)

Those are some darn funny quotes. I love the one Divine made. I adored Divine. John Travolta just won't do.

Nicholas: To the best of my knowledge, these are all actual quotes.

Barbara: Although it hadn't reached the "House of Horrors" level that it did in subsequent years, Michael's nose already had gone under the knife by the time "Thriller" came out (1982). As you probably know, Marvin died in 1984.

Lori: Although I like Boy George, I was thinking the same thing as you when I read his quote about Prince.

Open Grove: The 13 quotes I included barely scratched the surface of celeb on celeb nastiness. While reading the book, I often found myself saying "Ouch!"

Susan: In the PC world that we live in, most celebs feel the need to play nice. However, I know that there are still some who don't pull any punches.

SJ: I love those stories about old Hollywood. Although we get a ton of juicy Hollywood gossip today, just imagine the stuff that we don't hear about?

Pjazzy: Bette's comments about Marilyn were priceless. I could easily do a TT alone on things Bette said about other celebs.

Sandy: When I usu. picture Peter O'Toole, it's from the last 25 years or so. If John Huston were still alive, can you imagine what he would have to say about the present-day Peter?

Julia: I first learned how funny and candid Marvin could be when I read his bio "Divided Soul". That quote about Michael was brilliant.

Journeyman: I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall on the set of "All About Eve" (the only film that feat. both Bette and Marilyn). In addition to those two, I'll bet that cast members such as George Sanders and Thelma Ritter would have kept things interesting when the cameras weren't rolling.

Auria: It would have been interesting if "The Bodyguard" was filmed back in the 1970s when it was first pitched to Hollywood. A cross between Audrey Hepburn and Joan of Arc is an intriguing mix. When I think of Joan, I picture Jean Seberg (who played her back in 1957).

One Luv: Milton Berle's quote is one of my faves too... the play on words is excellent.

Nancy: Although I haven't seen the "Hairspray" remake, I find it hard to believe that Travolta can top Divine's portrayal of Edna Turnblad.

Could you turn that racket down, I'm trying to iron in here!

Oh my goodness how funny. Thanks for finding these gems. I once read that when Katherine Hepburn showed up at her very married lover Spencer Tracy's funeral, his wife looked at Katherine Hepburn and said, "Oh, I thought you were just a rumor." Ouch.

By the way, Malcolm, it's never too late for you to catch up on "Lost." Just rent the DVDs, sometime when you know you're going to have time on your hands. I got started watching the show on DVD, and I'm totally hooked now!
