Retro Commercial: Spaghetti-Os

In this spot from 1987, the Oh-Oh Kids sit down to enjoy some Spaghetti-O's. I don't know about any of you, but Spaghetti-O's was one of my favorite treats as a kid. They were especially good when my mother added cut up hot dogs to the mix! It wasn't exactly Lean Cuisine, but I didn't worry because I could always work off those extra calories on the playground. But I digress...

Trying his best to give Messy Marvin a run for his money, the youngest Oh-Oh kid does the world famous Spaghetti-O toss with his spoon and attempts the old table cloth trick not once, but twice! One of the Oh-Oh Kids later struck sitcom gold by making messes on a regular basis. Listen geek, if you ask "Did I do that?" one more time...

I must say, I never had Spaghetti O's when I was a child. In my house it was all about the Libby's Alpha-getti, Zoodles and Dino-getti.

Bizarre or surreal actually. It's funny I never noticed before...but those kids are so much older than they first appear. Not uncommon for child actors to look infantile but be four yrs...or much much older...

Loved your TT list Malcolm, terrific idea for a post. I'm looking forward to Sunday. It's so funny I read yesterday Winehouse wasn't allowed a visa to U.S. now tv ads running last night and today for Grammy's all say "nothing could stop the most nominated artist from attending the Grammy's...my god...the media and people love the coverage on her huh? It's astounding the attraction of her persona in th public...

I'll tell you a secret.....I'm STILL a big fan of Spaghettios and I'm 41! LOL

I prefer the ones with the mini meatballs as opposed to the hot dogs, though :)

Interesting taking this trip down memory lane. I'd almost forgotten about commercials like this. In some ways, the production of it (quick edits, plot line, product shots) seems a little bit ahead of its time.

Mistress of the D: I was tempted to go out and buy a can (or three) when I typed up this post.

Colin: I never had the three that you mentioned, but they sound tasty.

Candy: The one thing that stuck out to me was the voice of the kid wearing the baseball uniform. He reminded me of "Froggy" from the Little Rascals/Our Gang. The voice sounded like it was dubbed. I wonder why.

Thanks for the props about my TT post last week. I too was struck by the love fest the media had for Amy Winehouse. I like her and all, but you would have thought that she was a 10-year plus music vet the media were acting.

The Rock Chick: Aw man, those mini meatballs were pretty good. I liked them better than the Spaghetti-Os.

X. Dell: Although I don't know for sure, the commercial looks like it was influenced by Hershey's Chocolate Syrup ads feat. Messy Marvin. I couldn't find any more of the "Oh Oh Kids" spots on You Tube so I don't know if any others were made.

You know what I love about that retro commercial? It's a take-off on more retro - Spanky and Our Gang aka The Little Rascals! Complete with the dog and Alfalfa, don't you just love it?

Okay, I'm dating myself I know, but I used to love Alfalfa's cowlick. That's what happens when you're a pop culture obsessed baby boomer, lol.

Good call out regarding this commercial's nod to Our Gang/The Little Rascals. When I watched this commercial on You Tube, I noticed that the kid in the baseball uniform not only talked like Froggy but he also wore a beanie like Spanky.

I loved watching those old movies as a kid in the 1970s. If you don't already have it, I highly recommend the book "The Little Rascals: The Life and Times of Our Gang" by Leonard Maltin and Richard W. Bann. It gives a synopsis of every Our Gang short ever made (including the silent films) and provides bios on all the performers. You can find it on Amazon at a pretty good price.
