The Detroit Red Wings Are Stanley Cup Champs!!

Red Wings captain Niklas Lidstrom hoists the Stanley Cup

Although this blog is mainly pop culture-based, sometimes I delve off into sports because that is another one of my passions. As some of you may know, the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in game 6 last night of the NHL Finals to win the Stanley Cup 4 games to 2. The Wings' latest Stanley Cup triumph gives them 4 in the last 11 years, an amazing feat in any team sport. Technically, you could say that they won 4 Stanley Cups in 10 years due to the 2004-2005 NHL lockout.

Last night's game had one of the best finishes I have ever seen in any sport. The Penguins were literally inches away from tying the game as time expired. The sound you heard around 11:00 PM EST last night was the simultaneous exhale by Wings fans because that puck didn't get into the net.

With times being as tough as they are economically, sports for me and many others is a great escape. For at least a few hours a day/night, you can forget about your troubles and just revel in the joy of rooting for your favorite team. As a fan of Michigan-based teams, I consider myself fortunate because of the number of quality teams that we have had in the area over the last few years.

Below is the footage of the 2008 Stanley Cup presentation. Congratulations to the Detroit Red Wings' organization!

One little trivia for you on the subject. You may know that their golie, Dominik Hasek, is from Czech Republic. But did you know he is the oldest golie ever to win Stanley Cup? :o)

Congratulations to your hometown team. We'll see how the Tigers do this year.

My apologies to Beckeye, but there is always next year.

You know, I'm a Hurricanes fan, but since they completely tanked the past two seasons after WINNING the Stanley Cup (honestly -- how hard is it to just make the playoffs when you're winning your division during the season? apparently, too hard), I was glad to see the Wings win. Anything to keep Sid the Kid from the Cup.

Holly: Ooh yeah! I was just reminded of the post you wrote when one of you and your husband's teams (LSU's college football team) won the national championship.

Pjazzy: I didn't think that the Pens would be able to beat the Wings three times in a row. However, I was nervous at the end of game 6.

BeckEye: Don't hate, congratulate. lol

Ivanhoe: I believe I did hear that fact about the Dominator on sports radio at some point.

X. Dell: Thanks! As for the Tigers, they are going to have to go on a run akin to the one the 1984 team opened their season with (35-5) in order to have a shot at the playoffs.

Beth: I didn't realize the 'Canes missed the playoff for the last two seasons... ouch! Although I don't have anything against Sid the Kid, I do feel that the league/media goes overboard in promoting him. That's one of the things that I felt hurt the NBA during the Michael Jordan era... promoting him at the expense of the league.
