Anther great list Malcolm! I became obsessed with Joplin when I was about 17, I'd go around singing Bobby McGee and Mercedes Benz constantly!
And WOW, Leather Tuscadero! I so wanted to be Quatro when I was 12! I wanted to be Joan Jet too. And Annie Lennox. lol And MC Lyte in her "Gotta Get A Roughneck" days.
Hey Taj! It's hard to go wrong with Joan Jett! She's another artist that I feel belongs in the RRHOF.
I put Janis Joplin in the category with singers such as Aretha and Otis Redding... the ability to take a standard and make you feel as if it was written specifically for them. Janis' version of "Summertime" comes to mind.
As for Suzi Quatro, I think she was a little ahead of her time (at least the U.S. wasn't ready for her). She was huge in the UK back in the mid to late 70s, but only had 1 hit over here (her duet w/ Chris Norman, "Stumblin In"). If she had come out during the early MTV era, I think she would've been bigger over here. If you haven't, check out my playlist for 5/26/07.
