As part of the PBS series "American Masters" series, "Marvin Gaye: What's Going On" will premiere on Wednesday May 7th at 9 PM EST and be repeated thereafter. Along with clips of Marvin both on and offstage, the documentary will also feature interviews with artists such as Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, and Mos Def. My only complaint is the program's length: it's only 60 minutes! Surely they could have given more airtime to an artist of Marvin Gaye's stature. Below is a clip of Marvin performing his hit "Hitch-Hike" on the 1964-66 ABC series "Shindig".

I've got to watch this. I know Marvin is a respected socio/political artist from a turbulent time, but I looove those romantic duets with Tammi. I wonder, were they partners musically before they recorded together, or were they a match made in Motown's business offices?
Thanks for the heads up on Paul Newman. It was so thoughtful of you!
The Gal Herself: Marvin and Tammi were teamed up by the powers that be at Motown. By the way, I like those extra "o"s you added to love. As for the Paul Newman heads up, you are more than welcome.
That's one of my favorite Marvin songs. You rarely hear it on the oldies stations anymore.
X. Dell: It's one of mine too. Most oldies stations will "I Heard Through the Grapevine" you to death, but they ignore some of his other hits. If you haven't checked it out, Joy AM Real Oldies 1550. They play the hits of the 50s and 60s, but they also dig deeper sometimes and play something unexpected.
