On Monday, bespectacled comedian Drew Carey was named Bob Barker's successor as the host of "The Price Is Right". The announcement comes after weeks of speculation as to who would take over for Barker, who taped his final episode on June 6, 2007. Some of the other names that were under consideration for the job were Rosie O'Donnell, John O'Hurley, George Hamilton, and Mario Lopez.
I am slightly skeptical about Drew Carey taking over the skinny mike on the long-running game show. Although I think Carey is qualified for the job, I wonder if longtime viewers will be accepting of anyone other than Barker telling them about the next item up for bid.
What are your thoughts on Drew Carey winning the hosting gig for TPIR?
Holiday cheer.

Let's see what happens in the new year with this Elon Musk presidency. It
should be very interesting.

Hmmm, I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I like Drew Carey, but on Whose Line Is It Anyway he often appeared as an insecure geek who gets a little flustered when people make fun of him or otherwise throw him for a loop. Should be interesting.
Hmm... if he's the flustery type, I don't know how he'll handle some of the more excitable TPIR contestants.
I'm surprised "The Price Is Right" has been on this long. Who in the world is watching it? (smile)
Malcolm - yeah, that's just what I'm sayin'. Not exactly the type to put excitable people at ease. And I don't see all the women being in love with him like they were with Bob Barker. (Though I do like him, like I said.)
Lori - I actually like The Price is Right but sadly - being employeed full-time and all - I never get to watch it.
Oh, I wish they would have picked Mario Lopez out of that group. He is a cutie. LOL...
Drew Carey...ahhh! I'll pass, thank you very much.
I am surprised at their choice. I must admit I watch reruns of Whose Line is it Anyway, but not to watch Drew Carey!
I don't think anybody will be able to measure up to Bob Barker. People don't deal well with change like this, so it might take some time for people to give him a chance.
I loved the show moreso than Bob, so I will give Drew a try. I still think Ellen would have been better though, or Wayne Brady. Wayne definitely would have been easier on the eyes! :O)
I started to mention that Drew's lack of sex appeal for the ladies might be a strike against him. Apparently, many of you think the same thing.
In the Entertainment Weekly issue that featured a story on Bob leaving TPIR, one of the behind the scenes people mentioned Bob's appeal to the ladies. This had never really occurred to me. After thinking about it, I feel that the sexual relationships that Bob had with some of Barker's Beauties made him even more attractive in the eyes of the female viewing audience.
It's hard to imagine, but when Bob Barker became host of TPIR, it was considered a risky move. Until then, longtime TV viewers associated Bill Cullen with TPIR (he was the original host when it aired from 1956-1965). With that being said, it's a big difference between 9 years and 35 years so Drew definitely has a big hurdle to overcome in that regard.
Ewwww, I would never consider Bob to be sexy. I had the opportunity to view a taping of the show (my name wasn't called), and Bob wears about a pound of makeup and every time I see a female contestant kiss his cheek it grosses me out.
Okay Malcolm, I'm not so sure about your theory. Just the thought of Bob Barker trying to get it with anyone makes me ill (LOL). Yeah, I know old men need love too, but I'm just saying . . .
Similarly, maybe I'm missing something here, but appeal-wise, in my book, Bob Barker and Wayne Brady are about tit for tat. Yuck and double yuck. Given the type of choices being presented, heck why not just give Bruce-Bruce the role and call it a day? (smile)
Hey Angela,
Bob was plenty sexy in his heyday, you missed it because it was forty years ago. But seriously I like Drew Carey, I mean you can't have a show in prime time on ABC for nearly ten years and not have some type of audience appeal. I mean would Rosie O'Donnell have been any sexier than Drew???
