Final Results of Motown Poll

In the recent Motown poll, The Temptations were selected as favorite group by almost 50% of the voters. What does it take for Jr. Walker and the All-Stars (as well as the Marvelettes) to receive some love? I wish I had the answer because both of these groups, though popular, received 0 votes. Here are the final results:

The Temptations- 46%
The Supremes- 20%
Martha & the Vandellas- 13%
The Four Tops, The Jackson Five, and The Miracles- 6% each
Jr. Walker & the All-Stars and The Marvelettes- 0% each

Below is a clip of the winning act performing their classic 1966 hit "Ain't Too Proud To Beg"

But its hard not to love the Tempts.

I voted their way....love the Temptations. Also, (please don't feel obligated!)I tagged you for a linky love meme called "What Inspires You to Blog."

It was really difficult for me to choose because I love the music of each and every one of the groups in the poll. I ended up choosing Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. The reason for the lack of votes for the likes of the Marvelettes and Junior Walker and the All Stars is possibly because many of the people who visit your blog are younger and not as familiar with the music of these two groups. Oh yeah, I see that your Meez changed his clothes...Sharp Outfit!

Love the Temps. Love the Four Tops. But I've always been more of a Stax girl.

Mistress of the Dark: Esp. the Classic 5 lineup (David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin, and Otis Williams).

Holly: If it had come down to a tie-breaker and the Temps were involved, I would have voted for them. Thanks for letting me know about the meme. I may participate in that one. I am still working on the "8 things" meme from earlier this month. I've been working on it little by little.

Pjazzy: I can see how it would be a difficult choice for some. Just as you do, I think that Jr. Walker and the All Stars and the Marvelettes didn't receive any votes was due to unfamiliarity. They may know songs such as "Shotgun" and "Please Mr. Postman", but they might not know who sang them.

Yeah, I decided it was time to freshen up my Meez... I'm glad you like the outfit. Since it is getting cooler, I thought it was time to ditch the T-shirt for awhile.

Beth: Choosing between Stax and Motown would be very difficult for me. I might have to get scientific and flip a coin.

OK, THAT's when music was really music! By the way, were Jr Walker and the All-stars the ones who did "What does it take to win your love for me"? Great song.

I was a real Top 40 girl growing up, and R and B was probably my favorite genre.

By the way, I quoted you and linked to you on my blog today!

Hi Cindy: You are correct... Jr. Walker and the All Stars recorded "What Does It Take To Win Your Love For Me". I love it when Jr. says "Gonna blow for you" before he begins wailing on the sax.

Also, thanks for letting me know about the quote and the linkage on your blog.

I initially voted for the Tempts, but Smokey and the Miracles were at 0% at the time. So, my preferences equal between them, I changed to the latter.

I actually remember watching this when it first aired. Now that I'm older, I wonder whether it's (just my) imagination, or if Eddie Kendricks is out of step.

Motown had a number of acts whose names aren't familiar, at least as Motown artists--the Spinners ("That's What Girls Are Made For"), Pat Boone and Charley Pride (on the Hitsville subsidiary), Kiki Dee, et cetera. Then there were the Motown acts people rarely talk about, like Bobby and the Vancouvers, and the Valideers.

BTW, I ain't naming that actress I mentioned two posts earlier.

I'll have to watch the performance again to see if Eddie misses a step. When the Tempts' appeared on "Shindig" to perform "My Girl", there is a moment where Otis is clearly out of step. It's on You Tube if you haven't seen it.

In the mid 60s, The Spinners had a couple of singles on Motown that should have been smashes (I'll Always Love You and Truly Yours). In additon to the ones you named, Chris Clark, The Elgins, and J.J. Barnes are some other Motown acts that are largely forgotten.

I didn't think you'd give the name of the actress that you referenced in the AMC post. However, I figured it was worth a shot to ask.

Hey Dell X,
You are right about groups like the Spinners and Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers out of Canada who did a song called "Melinda" and "Does Your Mother Know About Me". Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong fame was also a member of the group. Bobby Taylor was responsible for bringing the Jackson Five to Motown. Gladys Knight and the Pips actually had a pretty nice career with Motown before going to Buddah Records and releasing "The Midnight Train to Georgia".

Ah, Phazzypar, another Motown fan. Good to meet you.

Malcolm, I understand. You have to ask, right?

That's my favorite part too, Malcolm! Man, I miss R and B.
