Don't let the title of this post fool you. On Sunday night I caught Britney Spears' performance that kicked off the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. Britney's performance was stunning... but for all the wrong reasons.
For starters, she was out of shape. Although Britney doesn't need to put Jenny Craig on speed dial, it's still a little premature for her to be wearing the bra and panties ensemble she sported Sunday night. Her performance was also poorly lip-synched and surprisingly stiff at times. Britney almost seemed like she didn't want to be there. Believe me when I say that she would have did herself and the viewing audience a favor if she did pull a no-show. A barfly doing her version of "I Will Survive" on karaoke night right before last call would be more entertaining. At least you know that she's actually singing!
I can't say that Britney's performance on Sunday night was uninspiring because it did lead me to search You Tube for clips of one of the greatest live performers of all time... Tina Turner. The clip below is from her days with the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. Filmed in 1965 as part of the all-star concert "The Big TNT Show", this sequence includes a medley of "A Fool In Love" and "It's Gonna Work Out Fine". This performance showcases Tina's vocal prowess, sex appeal, and high energy... traits that Britney was sorely lacking on Sunday night. Tina is practically 3 times older than Britney and the rest of today's lip-sync divas, but I'll bet she can still teach them a hell of a lot about the art of live performance.

Britney Spears has never been "all that". Christina Aguilar is a much better singer/performer than Britney will ever be although she has never gotten the recognition she deserves. You are on the money regarding Tina Turner. I use to have "The Big TNT show" on video and at that time I referred to Tina as the female James Brown. Especially when she pays homage by performing "Please, Please, Please". With the exception of Beyonce, Mya, and of course Christina, most of these young women could benefit from attending the "Tina Turner School of the Art of Performing".
All kidding aside, I've long suspected Britney suffers from a mental illness of some sort. It's unfortunate that she's not being advised to get some help. Then again, maybe she is, but just refuses to take her meds.
Anyway, even though I know you've got plenty of better things to do, I've tagged you for a random list of 8. At some point, if you're feeling so inclined, might you list 8 random facts about yourself?
Inquiring minds want to know (smile).
OMG...I haven't watched it yet, but I'm going to have to. I have the picture where she's beating an SUV with an umbrella (with newly shaved head) stored on my computer. I know it's wrong, but when I need a good laugh, it's always there.
Hi Malcolm,
I agree with Lori. I truly believe that Britney is mentally ill. I thought it was drugs or drinking at first, but I think it's beyond that.
Tina could put almost anyone to shame in my opinion. That woman just plain rocks!!!
On a side note, I just read that Ike Turner just divorced his 15th wife. 15th? I think it's safe to say he might not be marriage material :)

I'm not sure that Brittany has talent more than she has handlers, it's all a show.
Wasn't that a painful performance?
I have to go watch it now...I didn't get the chance cos I avoid MTV like the plague these days...
I didn't watch Brit's performance but was not surprised. Its really sad, I hope she gets help for whatever it is that's got her so messed up.
As for Tina - I ADORE HER! I could watch her for hours (and have!) I had the privilege to see her years and years ago when she was till with Ike (yuk) but she is still JUST as amazing (maybe more so) today!
Pjazzy: I agree with you about Britney. That's not to say that I think she is totally talentless. I do remember that some were shocked when Christina Aguilera beat out Britney for the Best New Artist Grammy. Why they were shocked is a mystery to me because I to feel that Xtina could blow Britney off the stage.
A few years ago, AMC (back when they were still American Movie Classics) showed "The Big TNT Show". I should have taped it because it's not available on DVD. One of my favorite scenes is the opening credits sequence when the artists, dancers, and some kids are cavorting down Sunset Strip.
Lori: I think that Britney is listening to bad advice she is getting or not heeding the good advice she has received. If this is true, that's a bad combo.
Mama PJ: Celebs such as Britney make it too easy for us to laugh at them and for that, I will always be grateful.
The Rock Chick: I read somewhere that although it's been said that Ike has been married 13 times, he has only been known to have married four times publicly. Whether it's 4, 13, or 15 times, he still isn't Mr. Matrimonial Bliss.
Jenny McB: The cover of the current issue of Entertainment Weekly sums up Britney's performance perfectly. The headline reads "Oh, the Horror!"
Barbara: Do you have any good stories surrounding the Ike and Tina concert you attended?
